Social media is a beast to understand all of the different platforms. When to post, how many times, who should you target are all things to consider; however, the point of Social Media is to become social. You want to engage with other people to have valuable discussions that make both your lives better. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. There are time where the other people misinterpret your meaning or you are not clear on the point that you are trying to make and people get mad...that happened to me and I talk about it today.

Also, there is a weird ocean story about an Adult Film star in a shady cage, who got bitten by a lemon shark..truly bizarre.

Finally, I talk about a study where fish are changing behaviour to be closer to Marine Protected Area (MPA) boundaries.

There is a big problem in San Francisco Bay: A number of sharks and other fish are washing ashore dead. Sean van Sommeran is on the front lines making sure each fish is processed and analyzed to find out why.

Sean's organization, The Pelagic Shark Research Foundation, is partnering with the Marine Mammal Center and some researchers who specialize in fish health to help determine why a number of different sharks such as leopard sharks, white sharks and other fish (eagle rays, etc.) are washing up on the shore dead.

These strandings have bee occurring for the past 5-6 weeks and it's not the first time this type of stranding event has occurred.

Listen to the podcast to hear more on why these sharks and other fish are dying this spring.

Whales are the focus of today's podcast as they are in the news on the East and West Coast of the United States. Some of the news is good and some of the news is bad. Even the good news is not that great. Here is the breakdown of the episode:

1) 41 Humpback whales washed ashore dead over the past year (average is 14). Scientists are looking into it;
2) Orcas hunt Grey Whale calf like they are supposed to, but headline makes it seem like they are killing for fun;
3) How to be better scientists, activists, advocates or conservationists.

Dr. Lyne Morissette joins me on Ocean Talk Friday to report back on her time at the Earth Optimism Summit, which she said changed her life!!!

The Earth Optimism Summit happened last weekend sandwiching the March for Science in Washington, D.C. Both events were huge successes according to many attendees who were able to do both. Dr. Lyne Morissette, who has been on this podcast numerous times, was able to attend the Summit and was kind enough to come on and share her experience.

Listen to why she thinks Marine Science and Conservation needs to put out more optimism in their messages.

I am solo today for Ocean Talk Friday so I decided to speak on two major events happening in Washington, DC this weekend: Earth Optimism Summit and the March for Science.

Friend of the podcast, Dr. Michelle LaRue, will be speaking at the Earth Optimism Summit as well as many other speakers from all over the world. I chat about the Summit and all the wonderful topics that will be covered over the three days.

On Saturday, Earth Day will be met with a March for Science by a number of people who want to tell governments around the world that Science is important in decision making, especially when it comes to the environment. People have been talking about not Marching in the podcast because they don't want the public to think that science is politicized. I talk about my thoughts on the March and why I am for it.

Farah Obaidullah is a Marine Scientist who is ensuring women in our field have a voice for equality. I was extremely proud to have Farah on the podcast to discuss her platform that she has built to provide women a chance to meet and share their work with a common voice. If you are a male or female ocean conservationist then you will want to hear this episode.

Even if you are not in the Ocean Conservation Field, this issue will still apply to you as it applies across many fields.

Dr. Michelle LaRue joins me on Ocean Talk Friday to discuss a number of topics going in in Ocean Conservation. This is Michelle's first Ocean Talk Friday and she killed it!

We switched up the normal structure of the episode this week where we discussed 1 article and 3 topics that are hot in the Marine Science and Conservation Community.

Michelle starts the episode off by discussing the launch of her new Citizen Science Project about quantifying the Weddell seal population in the Antarctic.

Here are the topics:

1) Climate Change could affect the way Polar Bears hunt seals;
2) Why is the Sea Grant budget being cut?;
3) March For Science and why it's important; and,

I am joined by Clark McNulty who co-founded Oceans Global with his siblings after a family tragedy to help the ocean and people. After their brother Kirk passed away from a drug overdose, the McNulty family wanted to expand on his legacy as an Ocean Lover (a water classman, surfer and inspired by everything ocean) and help people who were struggling with drug addiction get better.

They created Oceans Global, which is a non-profit organization that builds programs to help patients of rehabilitation facilities become inspired by Ocean Activities and Conservation projects. Listen in as Clark describes the program and how Oceans Global works to serve the Ocean and People.

Wow, 300 episodes! Publishing 300 episodes is something that I never thought that I would be able to do. A year and a half ago, I published my first podcast to help people understand what was happening with the Ocean and what solutions they could implement to help resolve the problem. Now, after 300 episodes and over 70K downloads, the Speak Up for Blue Community has grown into a force that is out to protect the Ocean.

Nathan Johnson, Dr. Lyne Morissette and Dr. Edd Hind-Ozan join me on this special Ocean Talk Friday to discuss the following topics:

1) Should we pay to get experience in Marine Science and Conservation to benefit our careers?
2) Is BREXIT good for managing fisheries?
3) Is the March for Science good for Science?
4) Conservation vs Animal Rights
5) Is downlisting a Species At Risk good or bad for Species Risk Management (Manatee as an Example).

Doug Parsons is a Climate Change Adaptation Expert and the host of the podcast America Adapts, A Climate Change Podcast. We talk about Climate Change in a Trump world and how to focus on adaptation.

I am delighted to have Doug on the podcast as he is a scientist and another podcaster (we podcasters have to stick together). I think it's critical for Doug's podcast to exist because we need to go beyond the faux debate of whether humans are contributing significantly to climate change and discuss the ways that we can adapt to the consequences and reduce our influence.

Dr. Nancy Knowlton joins me on the podcast to discuss the Earth Optimism Summit that is occurring on April 21st-23rd to discuss Conservation Successes happening all over the world.

We, as science communicators; scientists; and, conservationist, tend to focus on the doom and gloom of conservation, the "What's not going right with the environment." However, people don't respond to that much. In fact, they tend to ignore it because they don't want to here negative things all the time. They need hope. Earth Optimism provides that hope because it demonstrate that the Earth can be fixed.

I explore the way human activities are affecting Ocean habitats and species in a negative way even though they mean well. The first story deals with a cruise ship running aground on 1600 m2 of reef off the coast of Indonesia while at low tide (the crew should know not to go through the area at low tide). The second story involves a woman, Ocean Ramsey, who promotes shark awareness and protection through a service that she has where she teaches people to ride along the dorsal fin of large sharks.

Take a listen as to what I think of these human uses and what should be done to decrease their impact on the Ocean.

Do you ever search for in depth articles on the environment, especially the ocean, but can't find any article that fits your criteria? Well, Mongabay is the site for you. I came across Mongabay after the editor, Erik Hoffner, informed me of an article on Marine Protected Areas in which I might be interested in reading.

Marine Protected Areas are one of my research interests, as many of you long time listeners know. Therefore, I started reading the site and loved every part of it. The site is not just about Oceans as they have many articles on rainforests, land animals and freshwater habitats.

I had to ask Erik if I could interview someone from Mongabay to find out more about this non-profit, journalism organization. Erik referred me to Mike Gaworecki, who is today's guest on the podcast to tell us all how to conserve the environment in today's digital world.

Politicians have a strange way of twisting facts to ignore the importance of basic necessities such as clean water and air. Sometimes you wonder if they even care at all about what is going on in the world. The latest of the US federal government administration tactics is to take away the names of the Environmental Protection Agency by only referring to it as the EPA. They also mention repeatedly that the EPA is over-reaching its authority and hindering job creation.

I'm going to tell you why this is bad for the US environment, including the Ocean.

Resisting against bad policies can work, but it's important to know what the policies are and which one we need to focus our attention. In today's episode, I talk about 3 stories that have come to my attention recently:

1) Is the US government really proposing to Eliminate the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)?
2) How a specific lobby group got the a Congressman to rescind a bill that could harm National Parks; and,
3) Why it's important for Scientists and Conservationists to comment on government reports and policies during the open public comment periods.

No one enjoys seeing whales and dolphins get stranded. It's a sad site. Last weekend's mass stranding of 650 pilot whales of the northern coast of South Island in New Zealand is no different. However, it's a good chance to take the time to tell you why marine mammals get stranded.

In this episode, I tell you what happened this past weekend; why strandings happen in this part of the world so much; and, how people responded to it.

Snorkeling is probably one of the easiest things to do with the Family. I took my family out snorkeling at a marine park in Mexico to view the local wildlife. I saw some some good things and bad in regards to people snorkeling, so I thought I would give you some tips on how to snorkel if you are a beginner or someone who loves to snorkel and wants to make sure they do it right in terms of your own safety and the safety of the Ocean.

Also, I lend a few words on what happened to Ocean Conservationist and Scientist, Rob Stewart, who died during a diving accident. I hope I did him justice.

2) The Devaluation of National Parks (Update as of late yesterday, this bill was rescinded as the fishing and hunting community did not like that bill...YAY!); and,
3) Science is silenced by Trump.

Ocean conservation issues arise all around the world and there are people who want resolve those issues, but how do they do it. According to Doug Fetterly, our guest today, who is chair of the Marine Action Team (MAT) with the Sierra Club, he says people should make their voices heard on social media and in person. However, there is more to just Speaking Up For The Blue. There are particular strategies that will help your voice be heard and considered by the right people.

Doug goes over those strategies to let the Speak Up For Blue community know what we can do to ensure our Ocean Conservation values are taken seriously.

Ocean Science and Conservation Communication is more important now more than ever as the oceans, and environment in general, are changing at a rapid rate and government are slow to act. Communication allows the right information to get in front of the public so that they can make more informed decisions on how to live for a better Ocean. But how do you get in front of the public in this day and age?

Allison Randolph, aka Ocean Allison, specializes in Ocean Science and Conservation Communication (has experience with podcasting, video documentaries and public speaking) and stops by the podcast to tell us how she got involved in the field and how you can communicate science effectively to make a difference.

Fake news and trolls suck! They can ruin your day either because you fall for the fake news or you get emotionally baited into dealing with social media trolls. When you are starting to get into Marine Science and Conservation Communication, you will likely run into both. Haven't yet? Try using the #climatechange and post an article or statement saying something like "We need to do something about this darn climate change." You will most likely run into some animated characters.

I have a certain system to deal with fake news and trolls and it based on experience and what some of my friends and colleagues have been through over at Southern Fried Science.

Beach Clean Ups happen all around the world organized by many individuals and organizations who want to protect the Ocean. And they are all doing great work. However, Shon Miller's organization is different.

Shon started the San Clemente Beach Conservation Program to not only clean up the beach in his home town, but to instill a sense of sustainability into the organization's supporters. As a young organization (August 2016), Shon has facilitated chapters of the SC Beach Program in Portugal and other Countries with leaders who share his mission and vision. Shon has also partnered with sustainable brands such as Beautiful PM (a surf board designer that makes surfboards from reused materials) and Mulch California (a fashion company that makes clothes from reused raw materials.

Check out the interview to find out how he feels connected to the Ocean and how he started, and grew, the SC Beach Conservation Program.

Donald Trump will become the 45th President of the United States this Friday. It's well know that his new administration does not believe climate change is human induced so they will not do much to stop it. However, what will his administration do to deal with the consequences of Climate Change that affect the Economy, Human Health and National Security, 3 themes that are important parts of the Republican Platform.

I suggest a way to approach dealing with the consequences of the Climate Change using a great article written by Dr. Ellen Prager and Dr. Tim Dixon in the Huffington Post.

Imagine the biggest retailers in the wanting to ensure they source sustainable seafood...well, it's true.

Walmart, Sobeys, Publix, High Liner Foods, and more larger retailers are working with Sean Murphy's organization called Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) to ensure their seafood they purchase is sustainable. Sean tells us successful sotries of brands working directly with fishing communities to help manage fisheries properly to avoid overfishing, environmental degradation and social issues while maintaining a viable seafood product for their customer base. It's a win-win situation.

Tilikum was a captive orca made famous by the documentary "Blackfish" died at the age of 33 in his Sea World pen in San Diego, California. His tragic story of being ripped from his mother and forced to live in a small enclosure where he only interacted with human trainers (in which he is responsible for killing two of them) grabbed the hearts of millions of people to the point where they stopped attending Sea World parks driving the price of Sea World's stock down forcing the park to make drastic changes to their breeding program and their entertainment program.

SUFB 260: Monitoring Pelagic Sharks With Sean van Sommeran

My first interview of 2017 HAD to be about sharks!!! Sean van Sommeran is the Executive Director at the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation. Sean and I discuss what he observed in sharks over the past 35 years along the coast of California and other places like Canada and Chile.

We often hear about the popular shark species such as great whites, tiger sharks, bull sharks and hammerhead sharks; however, Sean talks about shark species such as the basking sharks and leopard sharks. It's fun to talk different shark species with someone who has studied them for so long and has been involved in establishing one of the first shark conservation organizations back in 1990.

Happy New Year!!! I thought I would kick off 2017 with letting you know what I have planned for Speak Up For Blue. I am super excited about this year because this is the year I plan on moving away from my full time job to dedicating my full time on Speak Up For Blue.

My main goal is to continue to build a strong Marine Science and Conservation Community with you and the other audience members.

Last year we discussed at length how grassroots movements will be the key to moving forward in conserving the ocean in 2017, especially when facing government administrations that do not put protecting the environment at the top of their list. A strong online community that has rational science-based discussions to advance ocean conservation will be important in 2017 and beyond. Does this mean that I am only searching for scientists to join the community? Absolutely not!!! You know me better than that!!!

I am searching for you to join the community. It costs nothing more than the time you are already putting in to listening to this podcast. Keep listening to the podcast all this year and you won't miss out on any of the new and exciting things happening at Speak Up For Blue (including relaunching our You Tube Channel: Speak Up For Blue TV).
