Dr. Luiz Rocha found a new species of fairy wrasse, a fish species, in a remote area off of the coast of Madagascar. He asked his colleague YI-Kai Tea to confirm it was a new species to which he did and he named it after Black Panther. The full Latin name of the fish is Cirrhlabrus wakanda. The name was meant to be a reference to a pop culture movie because Tea wanted people to identify with the fish in order to conserve it. Conservation of new species is a little tricky. I describe why in the episode. Take a listen. Do you think new Ocean species should be names after pop culture references?
