There is a scientific review paper out that was authored by a number of high profiled marine scientists that say we can turn the poor health of the Ocean around by 2050 based on conservation success stories of animals such as the Humpback whale, manatee, and other charismatic ocean species. That's great news, right?! We will need to double our efforts to fight a number of issues such as climate change, ocean plastic pollution, and overfishing to name a few in order to change the tide on the Oceans. Imagine a life where all businesses go about their business with minimal impact on the Ocean and the Planet as a whole. It sounds like a great dream, doesn't it?! According to a recent UN Global Environmental Health Report, we will need to make serious changes faster to reach that dream, or else. The UN Report is a damning one that calls out deleterious human practices that have altered most of the Planet's habitats and put millions of species at risk of extinction as a result. Listen to the episode for more details and how we enact change within our governments. What do you think of the report? Dr. Craig McClain is into Science Communication and when I say he is into SciComm, this is the man who created Deep Sea News, one of the first marine science blogs. Creating innovative science products is not new to Craig, so when he contacted me about OceanDotComm 2108 and asked me to apply to come to LUMCON, I couldn't say no because I knew this event would be huge even though I didn't know what the event would entail as it was a mystery. Craig and his wonderful staff kept it a mystery from all of the other SciComm Experts. He did it for a reason. Take a listen to find out why Craig kept the SciComm theme a mystery and why he chose the theme he did.
