Dr. Carl Safina is not just a Marine Scientist, or ornathologist, or ocean plicy maker, or science communicator...He's all of those wrapped into one. I had the pleasure of interviewing Carl and asked him how he has been so effective in protecting ocena life during is career. His answer was wonderful.
I also asked him about some major issues like Climate Change and the Seafood industry.
Carl is an Ocean Leader and a great person, which I highly respect. It's not everyday you get to interview you heroes. But today was one of those days!

Great White Sharks were vilified in the popular set of movies of "Jaws" in the 70s and they are consistently vilified in the media being described as "monsters" and "man-eaters." This tends to happen when we don't know too much about an animal, which is why the Great White Shark is this week Profiled Species on Species Tuesday.

California has been in a severe drought for the past 4 years and they had to conserve water in the meantime. However, a growing population and increasing climate change impacts makes things more challenging. So the government of California is turning to the Ocean to solve their water needs. A Brazilian dam operated by Samarco, a mining company, collapsed two weeks ago flooding the Doce Basin with toxic mud leaving over 280,000 people without clean water and killing at least 12 people. The government estimates the clean up will take 30 years and cost 1 billion dollars; however, environmentalists say it will cost 27 billion dollars. When I was a kid, there wasn't much info on the net regarding my favourite subject, Marine Science. But now things are different. Dr. Craig McClain is the cheif editor of the website DeepSeaNews.com. His site details research and issues important to a variety of his fellow researchers and colleagues. The information ranges from simple ecology to myth busting the latest issues. All while writing in an entertaining format.
