I had a great listener question that I decided to cover on the podcast because I thought it was an important topic.

@harveyperello asked: Why do we ignore ocean solutions when fighting climate change?

It's a terrific question! The answer comes down to how the ocean is covered in media. You never hear about great ocean projects such as the ones that plant mangroves to combat climate change (mangroves absorb 50 times more carbon than trees on land), but we do hear about 1 billion trees being planted as a new government program.

There are great programs out there, we just don't hear about them. I have some thoughts on why that I share in during this episode.

Discovery's Shark Week is their biggest rating week of the year and is quite the spectacle. The shows aim to inspire people to learn about sharks and understand how they work; however, is the program effective at communicating the right information?

A new scientific paper has been published to provide evidence that Shark Week has contained a lot of misinformation over the decades that they have been on TV. They also showed the lack of diversity in the hosts and the lack of experts in many of their programming.

Salmon populations can't stand the heat so they may be removed from many of the waterways that they normally occupy for spawning.

Salmon are cold-water species that do not do well in warm water; therefore, freshwater rivers where the salmon spawn are not ideal habitats when they heat up due to climate change. Add human barriers such as culverts, dams, and eroding habitats which impede access to spawning habitats and you get a recipe for disaster.

I also should not forget to mention that changes in ocean prey due to ocean temperature rising result in less healthy salmon.

Habitat restoration can help cool hot spot areas in rivers and allow more water to be held cooling river water further. Canadian and US governments are working hard to get restoration actions implemented to help wild stocks.

Closing salmon fisheries are also in place in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans to provide all of the chances possible for bigger and fitter salmon to spawn.

Florida is in a Red Tide event two years after its last red tide event. Hundreds of ocean species are washing up along the shore dead and rotting causing health problems for people with respiratory issues and killing the tourism industry.

Red tide events happen when nutrients feed a species of phytoplankton in combination with the right sea temperatures (high temps) and lack of wind. The proliferation of the plankton population is toxic to anything that ingests it including sharks and other fish, marine mammals, sea turtles, and seabirds.

There are two things that need to fix this situation: 1) work to reduce climate change (long term); and, 2) reduce the number of nutrients from industry (short term).

There were 841 manatee deaths since January 1st of 2021, which is the largest mass mortality event since 2013 (830 deaths). The deaths were due to a lack of seagrass in their favourite eating spot, Indian Lagoon.

Seagrass is a crucial part of the manatee diet and without the presence of the ocean plant, manatees end up starving to death. It's important to maintain good water quality for optimal seagrass health.

Unfortunately, water quality along the Florida coastline has been awful over the past decade due to sewage overflow runoff with high nitrogen and phosphorus levels. The higher nutrients create algal blooms that block the sun from getting to the seagrass. When the algal blooms die off, they land on the seagrass resulting in a major die-off of the plants.

Government policy on water quality and restoration of seagrasses will help re-establish the important coastal habitat; however, that will require a lot of time and money.

This episode is a bit of a rant that I have been thinking about for a while. Over the past few months, I've noticed that media companies (video, audio, and written forms) have been putting out content that either ignores science or drives a wedge between science and the public.

The film Seaspiracy told the audience and non-profit organizations that worked to conserve the ocean were actually working to support overfishing. Obviously a false statement; however, much of the audience still quote the movie four months later.

The New York Times published an article, where the author conducted their own "study" to determine whether Subway (the sandwich company) used real tuna in their tuna sandwiches. The study was not scientific and the results were inconclusive (stated in the article); however, the headline read "Subway does not use real tuna in their sandwiches."

Discovery is releasing a new program during Shark Week this summer (2021): a reality show that is searching for the next shark expert. An expert can be defined in many ways, but this "expert" search is not based on the scientific knowledge each contestant has. It is based on whether or not they can swim with sharks without getting bitten. Now, there are shark diving experts who are amazing and advocate for sharks, but many of them are thought to be scientists who conduct experiments, which can lead to misinformation.

Finally, during the 2021 Shark Week, there was an episode that aired with the people for the Jackass franchise. During the show, one of the members were doing a stunt into a body of water where sharks had aggregated. The man fell and got bitten. The rest of the episode was about how traumatized the man was for being bitten; even though, the stunt was not necessary and led to him being bitten.

Many media companies are sacrificing science for clicks and views while misleading their audience. I am very concerned as to where Science Communication is directed on large platforms.

A new report written by researchers at the University of British Columbia and supported by Oceana reveals the foreign fisheries subsidies are contributing to overfishing in foreign countries.

Countries such as China, Japan, South Korea, Russia, the USA, Thailand, Taiwan, Spain, Indonesia, and Norway will pay up to 35% of their total subsidies to their distant fleets to fish within the jurisdiction of other countries. In some countries, the foreign vessels outfish the domestic fleet two to one. The foreign fleet is often not allowed to fish and contribute to the illegal, unregulated, and unreported fisheries.

The best way to find out if your tax dollars are contributing to distant fleet fishing is to speak to your federal elected representative.

Fishers have had to adapt to many changes over generations. Some of those changes are natural, but most are human-induced.

For one fisher in Alaska, adapting has been part of his entire life. Dune Lankard is an indigenous fisher in Alaska who has had to endure tsunamis, oil spills, the commoditization of the Indigenous way of fishing and life, and now climate change.

Dune's latest adaptation to regenerative ocean farming provides a sustainable fishing model that is good for the ocean and his income.

Dr. David Ebert joins me on the podcast today to discuss four publications that went out in the last 5 weeks that name and describe a new shark species. These new shark species bring Dave's total described species to 50.

Dave talks about the process of naming and describing species and describes the four new shark species.

A couple of things that Dave is promoting today:
1) A new book: Sharks of the World - A complete guide

The last episode on Climate Change might have been a bit pessimistic so I decided to share a great resource on how you can fight climate change.

The David Suzuki Foundation has been working within Canada for decades to help Canadians understand and take action on Climate Change.

I read out their tips on how you can fight climate change and added some of my comments.

Last week was a crazy week for the environment, to say the least. The ocean was set on fire due to a busted pipeline, a town in British Columbia ignited into flames due to a heatwave, and the Arctic ice is melting at a phenomenal rate.

All of these events are related as they either contribute to Climate Change or are one of the many consequences of climate change.

We need to act fast to reduce Climate Change and eventually eliminate it, but we won't get there by electing politicians that don't act on policies that will help reduce/slow down Climate Change.

Your voting power is huge during elections in that it helps decide who will act on policies on Climate Change. Participate in all levels of government elections and then strike up a regular dialogue with your representatives.

Let me know what you are doing to work with your government officials by leaving me a message here: https://www.speakupforblue.com/show/speak-up-for-the-ocean-blue/

Two experience Canadian Fisheries and Oceans scientists have revealed that data points to multiple factors that are causing the recovery of Northern Cod to move at a snail's pace and seals are not the driving force.

Many fishers along the North Atlantic coast in Canada and the US think that the large population of harp seals (7.6 million) is to blame for the slow recovery. However, the blame lies on other major factors such as climate change and competition for the cod's prey by whales, seabirds, and people.

Warming waters due to climate change are influencing the change in dominant fish in places like the Gulf of Maine. Hake is becoming more dominant as the cold water-loving fish move north to cooler waters.

Capelin is a favourite prey food for cod, but it is also prey for whales, seabirds, and people. The low number of cod may not be able to dominate the food chain with their smaller numbers.

A number of studies have shown that seals are not affecting the recovery of Northern Cod. The study of seal scat (poo) showed that cod is not a major portion of their diet. Other studies showed an increase in the numbers of seals in a population along with an increase in the number of cod in the same area. If seals were eating cod, then the cod stocks would not be growing in the presence of a growing population of seals.

The US Navy conducts drills in the ocean on a regular basis whether it uses sonar or detonates bombs. Unfortunately, many marine species including marine mammals, suffer from these exercises.

Sonar exercises can affect the hearing of marine mammals and disrupt their communication within a pod that is used to hunting and looking after young individuals.

Explosives are a different beast. Small to large explosions can be tested that will result in the killing of nearby ocean animals and affect the hearing of marine mammals in the distance.

Two more "shock" tests, where a large explosive will be detonated will cause more marine species deaths in a time where we are trying to protect every individual.

Does Subway use real Tuna in their Tuna sandwiches? That is the question that many headlines read throughout social media sites recently as people were sharing variations of a New York Times article along the same lines.

The purpose of the article was to test whether a lawsuit filed by some people in California about what was in the Tuna sandwich at Subway; however, the experimental design was weak at best.

The "experiment" came back inconclusive so the result was that they didn't know the answer based on the results. Unfortunately, the headlines looked damning to Subway without any evidence that the restaurant chain doesn't use real Tuna in their sandwiches.

A recent article highlighted a string of containers that have fallen off of shipping vessels in recent months. Some shipping experts say that it is caused by a change in the direction of waves causing rolling pitches on the vessels.

The experts also say that taller ships with more containers stacked on top of each other are less sturdy, contributing to the increase in falling containers.

I was in a clubhouse room run by Zakia Rashid called Blue Planet this week and there was a discussion about oil spills at sea. Not the huge oil spills that we hear about on the news, but small spills that not many people ever hear about.

I discuss why these spills happen and how certain countries are trying to do something about these spills in terms of further protection.

I had an audience member reach out to me this morning to ask me some advice about creating content for Science Communication (SciComm). I love chatting about SciComm so we had a great discussion.

Listen to the episode on what my advice was for her. I think it might help you if you are looking to create SciComm content yourself.

The Coelacanth is a fish that continues to surprise the scientific community. Originally thought to be extinct, the living fossil was "rediscovered" after being caught in 1938 off the coast of Africa.

The surprises continue today after scientists found out that Coelacanths don't live until 20 as originally thought. They live up to 100 years.

Listen to the episode to find out how the new lifespan and how the conservation of this species has changed.

The UK government responded to reports that 97% of their Marine Protected areas had allowed trawlers to fish in the areas where the major goals of the MPA were to protect the seabed making the MPA ineffective. The response was to add High Protected Marine Areas in a pilot scheme next year for 5 ocean areas. It sounds great, but many critiques would like to see the areas designated sooner rather than later.

The US government passed a bill that will ban the sale and/or purchase of shark fins in the United States. There is more to the bill than a shark fin ban, which will address in a second.

The shark fin ban has had some controversy over the past years where some shark scientists have spoken out on the policy as punishing sustainable shark fishers who fish for sharks legally in the US. The ban of fin sales will effectively leave them out of the equation. Not everyone thinks the ban is bad. In fact, a number of conservationists and scientists think that the ban of sales/purchases of shark fins in the US will help protect sharks in the future.

An additional benefit of the bill is that it includes measures to address fisheries slavery and illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing of imported seafood.  This addition provides regulations for companies that import seafood to ensure the seafood is sustainable.

Oceans Week 2021 has been a very busy week for me as I scheduled 4 Speak Up For Ocean Blue episodes and a number of episodes for my client podcasts (more on that another time).

I also had the opportunity to take this podcast live on Earthx TV (earthxtc.com). I hosted 4 live episodes bringing on past guests of the podcast to do a video recording to discuss some of their new projects and strategies to help conserve the ocean.

I finish off the episode with a major theme for the week which is behaviour change and how we need to rethink the way we approach conservation with more positive vibes and achievable goals.

Michelle Amor is a Masters Student in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation at Scripps Institute of Oceanography. She is also an avid music composer and a violin teacher.

This episode dives into how Michelle decided to merge her two passions, music and oceans, into an audio creation that takes you through the sounds of someone driving from their house in the city to a beach. The piece reveals why we love the ocean so much as we seek calm sounds of waves hitting the beach and the sounds below the sea surface.

Today's episode will focus on the making of the audio piece while tomorrow's episode (a bonus episode for Ocean's Day) will have the audio piece in its entirety.

It starts with trying to solve a problem. Dr. Rebecca Helm, Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina Ashville, wanted to make sure ocean species such as jellyfish and other non-commercial species are protected in the High Seas. She complained about it on Twitter and people responded with the same sentiment. She turned to her Twitter friend, Nichola Clark from the Pew Charitable Trusts, and a marine policy scientist that specialized in the High Sea.

Nichola knew the ropes and how to put the movement Rebecca was building into good use, especially since there was a Biodiversity Treaty being negotiated at the United Nations. The movement continued and two years and one global pandemic later, a scientific letter was written and sent to the UN to outline three things the scientists wanted out of the treaty.

Listen to the episode to find out what those three things are.

Plastic pollution in the Ocean is a serious problem as 12 million tons of plastic pollution is added to the Ocean on a daily basis.

An amendment to the UN's 1989 Basel Convention added the disposal of plastic to reduce the amount of plastic pollution. where all of the original signatories have signed on to the amendment including China and Canada in the last year. However, the US has yet to ratify the convention since its inception. The Biden-Harris administration might be different, but they have not had the time to even consider it and there is a strong industry lobby that is opposing the Basel Convention.

This episode is purely motivational. I find that there is a perception that people should do everything perfectly if they are going to be eco-friendly. Apparently, there is no room for failure. You are either all eco-friendly or you are not at all. And that is the wrong way of thinking.

Changing human behaviour is hard and it takes time to achieve your full goals. I provide examples of how I changed certain aspects of my life to improve myself. I oftentimes will throw things against the wall to see what sticks and work on improving myself each time.

Don't be afraid about failure and act now for the Ocean.

The Deep Sea is quite a mysterious place. In fact, we know more about space than we do about the Deep Sea, which doesn't make a lot of sense since the Ocean is on our planet and we need to make a better effort in knowing our planet better. There are people who are trying to explore the Deep Sea more though and they are using technology to increase the chance of discovering more.

Dr. Edith Widder and Dr. Nathan Robinson have been collaborating since they were able to film a Deep Sea squid in the Gulf of Mexico using a camera system that was in the tons in weight and required a massive boat to carry. The weight and size of the camera restricted the number of times and places they could search for the Deep Sea squid. So they made the camera lighter (300 lbs) and smaller to provide the opportunity for more institutions to buy and cast the camera in various places around the world more times.

I am joined by Nathan to discuss why this camera could to more than additional footage of the Deep Sea squid and what it means for the future of biodiversity in the Ocean.

I feel as though my first lesson in web food ecology was learning about the dynamics between the Sea Otter, Sea Urchin, and the Kelp Forest. When one is out of balance (i.e. population is up or down) then it affects all of the other species.

When Europeans settled along the West Coast of North America, they hunted Sea Otters for their pelts. The Sea Otters nearly went extinct. Environmental protection from the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act increased the Sea Otter population, but not everywhere.

The Sea Otters are not found off the coast of Northern California, just North of Monterey Bay where the Kelp Forests have decreased by 90% over the past decade. However, in Monterey Bay the Kelp Forests have only decreased by 60% (still not great, but significantly better than to the North). The reason?

There is a presence of Sea Otters in Monterey Bay and they are keeping the Sea Urchin population in check.

If you are new to Ocean Talk Friday, it's where Clay and I each chose an Ocean article to discuss on the episode without telling the other person what their article is about. We describe the article and get each other's take on it.

Clay's article was about the Florida Man who was charged for taking a picture with a tiger shark that was dragged from saltwater to freshwater (not good for the shark) and held it out of water for long periods of time.

My article was about whether protecting 30% of the Ocean by 2030 was achievable.

How can seafood consumers truly buy sustainable seafood? The first step is to decrease the number of middle people in the supply chain so that most of the money spent can support the smaller-scale fishers who do most of the work and follow the regulations for responsible fisheries.

Sitka Salmon Shares is an Alsakan Seafood business that flips the current fisheries model on its head and provides a better alternative to seafood consumers.

Nic Mink is the co-founder of Sitka Salmon Shares and he joins me on the podcast today to discuss how he started the business and how he overcame challenges to provide a responsible and diverse array of species.

The Australian Sea Lion population has been declining for the past few decades. So much so that a Scientific Committee recommended the sea lions be upgraded to Endangered from their Threatened status.

The upgrade in status will afford more protections and more funds to help monitor the populations and help better determine and monitor the recovery plan.

The population is being hit by an increase in mercury levels, sea-level rise, and fishing pressure.

The new protections have included protecting a large area from bottom gillnet fishing in the same place where the sea lions forage.

Blue Carbon habitats can sequester more carbon than the Amazon Forests. Mangroves, Seagrass Meadows, Salt Marshes, and Kelp Forests are all considered Blue Carbon habitats and play a large role in reducing the effects of Climate Change.

Unfortunately, Blue Carbon habitats have been destroyed due to development priorities along the coastline. Restoring the habitats can be expensive, but is considered necessary if we want to significantly reduce Climate Change.

WILDCOAST has been working for over 10 years on a Blue Carbon Program that includes a Mangrove restoration initiative, where the staff work in collaboration with local communities along the Pacific Coast in Mexico and Southern California to protect existing Blue Carbon habitats and restore those that were gone.

The common practice when discussing the reduction of Climate Change is to mention trees that sequester carbon through photosynthesis. There are additional ways to sequester carbon that often get ignored, which is to look under the ocean's surface.

Seagrass, mangroves, salt marshes, and kelp forests all play an important role in sequestering carbon and do it way more than trees (and faster). These habitats are also known as Blue Carbon.

Countries are using Blue Carbon strategies to help sequester more carbon. The UK is using it to revitalize Plymouth Sound by planting seagrass seedlings that will make up 4 hectares of underwater habitat. The restoration project will include more than just Blue Carbon benefits, it will also include benefits such as nursery habitat and will solidify the sediment.

Cryptocurrencies are making a real splash across the world as artists are making millions of dollars to sell digital art and experiences that millionaires and even billionaires are buying like there is no tomorrow. The question is: Is there a place for marine conservation organizations to help with their fundraising. Dr. Austin Gallagher thinks so.

Austin is the Chief Scientist for Beneath the Waves, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting ocean health and using science and technology to catalyze ocean policy. Austin is also a social entrepreneur and uses innovative ways to raise funds in order for the organization to conduct its work.

Beneath the Waves recently dabbled in the NFT market to create experiences that would help fund their work and create opportunities for people to get involved that went beyond traditional means of funding.

Dr. Gallagher tells us about the experience and how they made tens of thousands of dollars selling a marine biology experience-type NFT.

However, the recent release and reaction of the public and the scientific community of Seaspiracy led me to think about ways that science communicators should react to controversial conservation documentaries no matter how they are made.

The number of Ocean aspects that are impacted by Climate Change is impossible to cover in one podcast. However, each aspect of Climate Change needs to be discussed and today I am going to be discussing how Climate Change is affecting biodiversity at the Equator.

It's important to note that many habitats and Ocean Species rely on a narrow set of variables such as Temperature, pH, Salinity, Depth, etc. Climate Change is raising temperatures all over the world and now species at the equator are moving towards the North and South poles to seek cooler waters.

A recent study showed how similar events in the past (millions of years ago) led to the last mass extinction, but not all events.

Find out more by listening to this episode.

I wanted to update you on a few new developments regarding Seaspiracy. The filmmaker doubled down on the wrong fact that sustainable fishing doesn't exist. He also started a petition for the UK to protect 30% of their ocean by 2030, something is already in progress (since 2019).

There was a great review by world-renowned Fisheries Scientist, Dr. Daniel Pauly, who said the movie's solution of stop eating seafood is a detractor to overfishing.

Follow this podcast to learn more about fisheries and the problem of overfishing.

A phosphate mine leaked and released an estimated 237 million gallons of wastewater with exceeded levels of phosphorus, nitrate, and ammonia. These levels in addition to the amount of wastewater released could have massive negative effects on marine life (including manatees, fish, and seagrass beds) in the immediate and surrounding areas.

The history of this area shows that the marine habitats may not be able to take many more damaging events such as this one.

Seaspiracy tried to tackle an enormous and complex problem and apply a simple solution that would not work on any realistic time scales or take into account cultural motives for eating seafood. However, the movie did highlight some major problems that are facing fisheries.

I thought that I would highlight some of these topics and try to apply how you could help in any way or capacity that you could dedicate.

We are bringing back Ocean Talk Friday! Clay Groves, Chief Executive Fish Nerd of the Fish Nerd Podcast, joins me to discuss a couple of articles on Marine Science and Conservation.

The first story we discuss is on a video where artisanal fishermen discuss how they have been forced to adapt their fishing methods because of the effects of Climate Change.

The second story involves how the colourful Fairy Wrasses have become so diverse due to the rise and fall of sea level over the past hundred million years.

Seaspiracy completely dismissed dolphin-safe labels on tuna as corrupt and a failure; however, they did not look at the differences between the labels and the regulations in various countries.

The US has regulations for companies that say their tuna is dolphin-safe and it stems from their Marine Mammal Protection Act and an Amendment that goes back to 1990. The program decreased the mortality of dolphins from 130,000, in 1987, to less than 1,000 in 2018 (mortality has been less than 1,000/year since 2011).

These numbers are only in the US and it does not include the problems internationally, but it is progress and has saved hundreds of thousands of dolphins.

Seaspiracy has generated discussions on every social media platform, which can be considered a good thing if you want more people to discuss reducing/eliminating overfishing in the Ocean. However, the types of conversations that I have seen and in which I participated have shown me a few things that we, as a conservation society of newly inspired activists and marine scientists/conservationists, need to mend before we can move forward and do what we set out to do.

I go over some of the conversations that I have had on Clubhouse, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and where I see we can turn these conversations into action.

Follow the podcast if you are interested in learning more about fisheries and what you can do to help reduce/eliminate overfishing.

There is no doubt in my mind that Seaspiracy got many facts wrong and misinformed the viewers on many aspects of the fishing industry. They entangled some facts with misinformation or misrepresentation that will cause people to look for the wrong solutions.  They could have made this film so much better by showing some of the solutions that people could support.

So here are 3 things I think Seaspiracy should have covered in their documentary.

Seaspiracy was released on Netflix last week and it was disappointing at best. It tried to "enlighten" viewers about overfishing with a simple question: "Can Fishing Ever Be Sustainable?" and it got the answer wrong because fishing is a complex issue in the Ocean.

Lack of research and misleading interviews threw a number of great organizations under the bus and touted an organization notorious for using violence to get their results.

I provide my review of this documentary in this episode.

I wanted to put together an episode of one of my favourite species in the Ocean, the Sea Turtle. There are 7 Sea Turtle Species and they are all on the Endangered Species List for many countries. They face many dangers around the world and at different scales.

I asked my good friend and colleague Dr. Nathan Robinson about the issues and conservation needs of Sea Turtles in 2021 and he provided me with some great points.

Listen to the episode where I discuss the top Ocean issue that Sea Turtles are facing and what we can do to stop the effects of these issues.

In order to manage the Ocean we must manage the People. We, the people, need to change the way we buy things to better protect the Ocean. One way is to move toward a Zero Waste lifestyle, but how do we do that. What do we need to do to move to a Zero Waste Lifestyle?

We ask for help. And today, I ask Jeanine Sinclair about her journey to going to Zero Waste.

Over 20 years ago, a global project called the Census of Marine Life observed a number of marine species migrating long distances across Oceans. It was new data that technology allowed us to see through satellite tags, a new tool at the time.

Satellite tags have advanced in technology over the past 20 years and that has allowed scientists to understand a little bit more about how marine species move through the Oceans. New research has revealed that marine species such as sharks, tuna, marine mammals, penguins, and sea turtles swim in circles inside and outside of feeding areas. The research has led scientists to hypothesize that the animals may be searching for navigation information from geomagnetic fields.

More research is needed to understand the micromovements of marine species.

I describe the chat and why people who don't think Marine Biologists are not scientists is a problem for Marine Conservation.

Imagine the challenges of building a business to 2021. I have a business, Speak Up For Blue (http://www/speakupforblue.com) and it is difficult. Now add on the fact that people are building sustainable businesses. Now add on the fact that some people have launched their business in the COVID-19 Pandemic. the challenges are immense and it takes a hard-working person to build a new sustainable business during a global pandemic.

I interview one of those people and her name is Marina Tran-Vu. She launched a company called Equo (link below) that sells sustainable products such as coconut, grass, rice, and bamboo straws as well as bamboo cutlery. She started the business because she was inspired in a coffee shop in Vietnam when the waiter handed her a grass straw.

Now she works with local farmers, who have been making these straws for centuries, to create the products and ship them worldwide. Marina tries to make the business as sustainable and transparent as possible. The latter is easier to do than the former as she tells me in the interview.

The Manatee population in Florida is doing much better since being added the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act in the 1970s. The population has increased from 600 to over 8000 individuals; however, there are still some things that we can do to make sure humans and our technology do not harm them or kill them, including making sure that the Manatee sensors on Flood Gates work.

We need to manage the human population in order to protect the Ocean. I remember Dr. Edd Hind-Ozan saying that statement in a conversation we had while planning for the International Marine Conservation Congress in Malaysia (2018). It always stuck with me because it was so true. Humans pose the biggest disturbances that contribute to our major issues in the Ocean (Climate Change, Plastic Pollution, Overfishing, and Marine Pollution). I want to add to the statement that we have to change the way humans behave around the Ocean. Conservation messaging will be important to accomplish behaviour change.

Behaviour change is an important field in Marine Conservation as it explains how to get the attention of a specific target market to change their behaviour for a conservation outcome. Messaging plays a large role in getting people's attention, holding it to educate them, and inspire them to follow the call to action.

For example, Plastic pollution is causing the death of marine mammals, we should stop using single-use plastic. It's a basic message that won't change people's behaviour, but there are ways to make the message more appealing. some people fail hard at that message.

I talk about two recent incidences that provide great examples of how not to create conservation messages.

The Marine Mammal Center is an organization that specializes in rescuing Marine Mammals along a 600 mile stretch of California Coastline. It's not an easy thing to do; however, the organization has saved thousands of animals over a 45-year period.

I was able to be connected to Adam Ratner (bio below) to discuss how the Marine Mammal Center goes beyond rescuing Marine Mammals through its various programs and storytelling. Listen to a few different stories of how the Marine Mammal Center has helped Marine Mammals and inspired people to live for a better Ocean!

Background on Adam

Adam Ratner began at The Marine Mammal Center in 2009 leading educational programs for high school students and visitors. Over the years, he has challenged people to think differently about ocean conservation using the stories of individual patients that are rescued by The Marine Mammal Center. By providing hopeful stories of action and tangible solutions, Adam helps people find inspiration and empowerment to become the heroes of their own environment and community. Today, as the Associate Director of Conservation Education, Adam serves as an expert on topics related to ocean health, such as climate change, ocean trash and sustainable seafood. His ability to break down big and complex ideas helps people understand how their actions have an impact on the ocean.

Adam was named one of the 30 under 30 Game Changers for the Planet by the North American Association for Environmental Education. Working collaboratively across sectors and geographic regions, he serves as the chair of the Training Committee of the National Network for Ocean and Climate Change Interpretation and is currently the Executive Chair of the Bay Area Climate Literacy Impact Collaborative. He is also a member of the Zero Waste Marin Local Task Force, the Global Ghost Gear Initiative and the Pacific Ocean Aquafarms Stakeholder Advisor Group.

Adam has been in the conservation field for over 10 years leading environmental education programming. He graduated from Bates College with degrees in Marine Biology and Psychology, with a focus on animal behavior. He has completed field research and studied animal behavior in labs around the country. His research includes studying bird hearing, as well as fish learning and memory.

About The Marine Mammal Center

Headquartered on the site of a former Cold War missile base, The Marine Mammal Center is a global leader in marine mammal health, science and conservation, and is the largest marine mammal hospital in the world. The Center’s teaching hospital and training programs operate globally, with its headquarters in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, part of the National Park Service. Expert teams from the Center travel around the world to work with emerging first responders and has itself rescued more than 24,000 marine mammals from 600 miles of its authorized rescue area of California coastline and the Big Island of Hawai‘i. The Center’s mission is to advance global ocean conservation through marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation, scientific research, and education.

The Cuttlefish is by far my favourite Ocean Animal. It's an invertebrate that is extremely complex and, at the same time, is beautiful.

I always knew that Cuttlefish had a higher level of intelligence, but a new study finds that their decision-making ability is beyond what research initially expected. The Cuttlefish can pass the Marshmallow Test, which is a test to detect the level of decision-making capabilities of the test subject. Apparently, the Cuttlefish is good with decisions.

Listen to the episode to find out the details.

There are so many people who are trying to save the Ocean and many of them mean well, but they don't always go about it the right way and pull people into their misguided and/or misinformed campaigns.

This episode contains 4 questions you should ask yourself before you support any Ocean campaign.

The Global Shark Population is declining all over the world; however, there is a way to protect using Marine Protected Areas in Exclusive Economic Zones. They are needed now more than ever since some sharks have a large migration and will venture out of MPA boundaries and into waters that are not protected.

The Ocean Conveyor Belt is an Ocean circulation system in the Atlantic Ocean that starts with the Gulf Stream coming out of the Gulf of Mexico moving up the East coast of North America and crossing the Atlantic to the UK. The system regulates the Climate along the East coast of North America and Northern Europe.

When the Conveyor Belt is moving at a regular speed it results in the climate that we are used to seeing in these areas; however, if the belt slows down, the climate will result in higher sea levels along the East coast of North America and cooler temperatures in Northern Europe with more droughts in the rest of Europe.

Researchers have measured a regression in speed in the Conveyor Belt over the last 1,000 years and it is caused by Climate Change. We need to reduce Climate Change before we can't do anything to stop the Conveyor Belt from slowing down.

There is a push by the marine science, conservation, and government world to use safer lobster traps that will not pose a threat to marine mammals, such as the critically endangered Northern Right Whales. The problem is that fisheries organizations are worried that the use of the gear is unaffordable and therefore unrealistic.

A recent article on NPR has an audio snippet that gives a peek into what it's like to observe a ropeless lobster trap come to the surface and not pose a risk to marine mammals.

Texas is in a State of Emergency due to a deep freeze event caused by Climate Change. Power outages have caused problems for many citizens in the state as they can't get access to heat and warm water. Now, politicians and media outlets on the right are putting the blame on the failure of renewable energy sources instead of telling the whole story. Find out why by listening to the episode.

The deep freeze in Texas is not only affecting Texans all over the state, but it's always affecting Sea Turtles. Animal rescuers made up of government scientists, organizations, and volunteers rescued 4,750 Green Sea Turtles that were affected by the deep freezing effects of the cold snap.

The cold temperatures affect Sea Turtles as they can render them immobile. The Sea Turtles can't swim to the surface to get air and could eventually drown.

The efforts from everyone that participated in the rescue potential saved the population of Threatened Sea Turtles.

Lionfish are an interesting species to look at and have a great ecological function in the South Pacific ecosystem, but the species is wreaking havoc in Atlantic coral reef habitats. There are a number of business efforts that are trying to develop a wider market net.

Lionfish were introduced to the Atlantic Ocean through the marine aquarium hobby trade and have been increasing in abundance ever since. There are a number of efforts to capture the invasive Lionfish through fishing derbies, serving lionfish at local restaurants, and using lionfish parts in jewelry.

Now a new business is trying to support those communities and scale the effect by bringing the seafood and jewelry market to a wider audience.

I had a couple of conversations this week where the question of supporting one another in marine conservation came up. One question was about why I help others start a podcast. The other was how to react when someone asks you for help within the Marine Science and Conservation Field.

The answer, we need to help each other out more and be better to each other.

Coastal Habitats play a very important role in the health of the Ocean and the security of the coastline. Seagrass meadows are one of the critical habitats that are often forgotten because they may not have the "sexiness" that other habitats such as coral reefs have; however, they provide a nursery habitat for thousands of species, filter out nutrients and heavy metals from the water, and act as a carbon sink.

There is one more benefit that certain Seagrass species provide the Ocean and that is filtering out large amounts of microplastics. The Seagrass species, Posidonia oceanica, produce fibrous material known as Neptune balls that trap 1,500 plastic particles per kilogram of seagrass each year. The Neptune balls often wash ashore where they can be picked up and discarded.

Researchers don't know the effects of plastics on the seagrass species as trapping plastic is a fairly new discovery and more research will be required.

P. oceanica is not the only seagrass species to have this ability to trap plastic pieces, Enhalus acodoides, is a species found off the coast of China's Hainan province and has been observed to trap plastics too, just a lesser amount.

The discovery adds to the benefit of keeping Seagrass meadows around; however, the Mediterranean species are slowly disappearing from the area due to a number of threats such as Climate Change, invasive species, pollution, boating anchors, and coastal development.

You might have seen a visualization that is circulating around the internet of a Blue Whale feeding within Northern Patagonia, Chile in a sea of ship traffic. The Blue Whale is rebounding over and over again as it confronts ships throughout the 7-day period of the visualization.

The visualization is a snapshot from March, 2019 of what blue whales face every year as they visit the area to feed and care for their calves. The massive whales can encounter more than 700 ships, where most of the ships are from the aquaculture industry bringing staff and supplies to their posts and back.

The visualization paints a dark picture of what Blue Whales encounter but provides evidence for conservation action within the area during the Blue Whale season. Conservation action in the form of shipping lanes and seasonal closures would be a start to protect Blue Whales and their young.

A new Administration, the dominance of one political party in the House, the Senate, and the White House brings along new changes. One of those changes in Climate Policy. The Biden/Harris administration promised changes to Climate policy that would reverse many of the policies from the previous administration, including the rejoining of the US to the Paris Climate Agreement.

I invited Jasmine Sanders, Executive Director of Our Climate, on the podcast to discuss what the new administration will mean to the Climate movement. She summed it up by saying: "Climate Work begins NOW!" Not that Our Climate wasn't doing climate work before. It's just that now there is a possibility to inform policy on Climate on the federal level that wasn't possible over the past four years.

Jasmine tells me about the work that is being done through her organization to mentor young people of all cultures and socio-economic backgrounds to help get involved with the Climate movement for their communities. She talks about work inside and outside Capitol Hill as well as other levels of government that need guidance on Climate Change reform.

We also discuss how Climate Change should include addressing environmental justice if we really want to create change.

Amelia Hursham is in a difficult spot. She is about to graduate with her undergraduate degree in Marine Biology; however, she will be completing her last semester during COVID...from home, as she is mandated to do online virtual learning. It's not ideal, but we are in a pandemic and it is better to be safe.

Unfortunately, Amelia will miss out on networking with the faculty and other students; she had a class trip/field course in Mexico canceled, and she cannot work on an oyster project in the field like she has been doing for the past 2 years.

Amelia wants to maximize her Marine Biology work experience as she prepares for her career, but she feels like she needs something that will provide her with the Networking opportunity and work experience that will solidify her experience. In comes Operation Wallacea, a science trip that will provide her with the experience she needs. Only one slight problem, the cost is 5,000 British Pounds and out of her budget.

She is not going to let that stop her from attaining her dream. Amelia is going to fundraise for the money which will not only help her pay for the cost of the course but also provide her with the experience in fundraising that could help her in the next job opportunity that comes her way.  And she is going to raise it by running a Marathon (26.2 miles)!!!

You can help Amelia achieve her dream by donating to her Go Fund Me campaign. If you are not in the position to donate yourself, then feel free to share this with some people who might.

If you have been to any beach in the Atlantic Ocean and/or Caribbean Sea, then you have probably witnessed a beach that has piles and piles of sargassum messing it up and causing a stink.

I remember this happening on my last visit to Mexico. My family and I went on vacation and we were looking forward to relaxing on the beach and swimming in the Ocean. When we got there; however, the beach was populated by piles (up to the middle of my shin!) of sargassum and trucks that were carrying it away. The trucks were there all day. Needless to say that the beach was not as peaceful as we expected.

It would be great if we could find a way to reuse the sargassum in a way that is sustainable instead of disposing of it in a landfill, right? Well, researchers at the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences are conducting a pilot study to answer that question.

The big question at hand is whether the sargassum contains elevated levels of Arsenic as they did in studies from Mexico and Texas. Tests are currently being analyzed to determine if sargassum along Florida beaches have similarly elevated levels of Arsenic.

If the levels are below the limits of Arsenic, then the pilot project can begin and we can see if sargassum can be reused as compost and mixed within topsoil for agricultural purposes.

The Songhees Nation looked after the TI'ches archipelago for over 3,500 years until their freshwater resource ran out forcing the members of the nation to find other places to live. Recently, some members of the nation teamed up with researchers to survey the waters of the archipelago to determine the presence of 25 ecologically and culturally important species.

The collaborative team used an affordable ROV called the Trident ROV to survey the area resulting in the discovery of 14 of the 25 targeted species.

The survey results concluded that further study is necessary to find out if the other 10 species are present in the archipelago.

The Songhees Nation would like to show its members that they could still live off of the land. Their goal is to get it protected and excluded from non-Indigenous people.

The study shows that collaboration between Indigenous and non-Indigenous scientists can work well together whereby both communities benefit.

The new President of the United States, Joe Biden, was sworn into office on Thursday, January 20th. One of his first orders of business was to sign an Executive Order for the US to rejoin the Paris Climate Accord as he promised he would do many times while running for President.

President Biden will take up where he left off with the Obama administration, where Climate Change was considered a huge priority as the Navy, NASA, and major science organizations agreed that Climate Change was the number one threat to the United States of America.

So what now? You should start to see legislation written and passed by the House and Senate to curb electricity generated Greenhouse gas emissions from coal plants and the transportation industry, The legislation will take a while as everything in government takes longer than anyone thinks, but we should start to see some progress within the next four years of the Biden administration.

Do you think rejoining the Paris Climate Accord will change anything in the US?

I am joined by Dr. Steve Box from Rare who tells me about how their Fish Forever Program works with local communities (ex. Fisheries communities) around the tropics to work with them to change their behaviours through action and make their livelihoods more sustainable.

They take cumulative actions through individual change.

Rare uses a proven strategy to help conserve coastal habitats within the 12 NM zone, where most of the human pressure takes place, to enable local communities to live a more sustainable livelihood.

Conservation of the Ocean can be done through individual behaviour change. It doesn't stop at fisheries communities in the tropics. It continues with you and me and the choices we make every day that affect the Ocean. The purchases we make and the way we use resources can change so that we can live for a better Ocean.

The documentation of the distribution of any ocean species is critical to knowing the health of the species global and regional populations. That is why the sighting of 3 beaked whales in the South China Sea by beaked whale experts was so important. It opened the possibility that the whales inhabit the Western Pacific Ocean.

The individuals were either ginkgo-toothed beaked whales or Deraniyagala's beaked whales as the two are very similar. Unfortunately, the sighting could not be confirmed as no DNA sample was taken.

There was an interesting observation however, there were two indentations observed on the beaks of the whales that is similar to other beaked whales that have had interaction with fishing gear. This observation fuels the thirst for more information about the animals and their distribution.

A former fisher launched a local radio station in Pambna Island, India to keep the fishing community informed of marine issues, women's roles in fisheries, and remembering major fishing events.

The radio station is effective because the messages are targeted to the local community, made up of mostly fishers, by a local community member. The fishers will listen to the radio for 10-12 hours while at-sea to such topics that drive communications on specific topics such as over-fishing, climate change, and plastic pollution.

One fisher told reporters that he now cuts sea turtles out of his trawl ner instead of selling them for food because he understands that sea turtles help eat invasive jellyfish.

The radio station is another example of why it is important to have leaders in the community to speak to fellow community members about issues that can affect them.

The key to protecting coral reefs or any ocean habitat is effective management, but you can't have effective management without good data that cover large areas. Oftentimes, your funding or the technology, or both will limit the monitoring program you need to develop the management strategy that you need to protect the Ocean.

Coral habitats are no different. There are many threats against corals and management will be key to their protection; however, the technology that is needed to determine the health of coral reefs is either non-existent or super expensive...until now. Arizona State University's Asner Lab used a  new imaging technology that was able to determine between live and dead corals during a monitoring program that covered the eight major Hawaiian islands.

A regular program to detect live and dead coral can help managers pinpoint areas that are in need of management compared to others that are doing better (higher percentage of coral cover).

The big question is can we fund this program long-term.

The word "TRUMP" was written on the back of a Manatee to the outrage of many people around the world.

The political war going on between Trump supporters and the House/Senate last week spilled over to the environment as a manatee was discovered to be swimming with the word TRUMP on its back.

When I first read the article, I was worried that the word was carved into the back of the peaceful marine mammal; however, after looking at the picture and getting confirmation from another article, I was relieved to hear that animal was not mutilated. The word was written by scraping off the algae to make the word like someone would write "Clean Me" on the back window of a dirty car.

The fact the word was written on such a magnificent animal was a kick in the teeth to all environmentalists as the Trump administration has been anything but friendly to the US (and global) environment. The administration dismantled the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), rolled back policies that were designed to protect the environment, and called open season for oil and gas exploration.

The incident is a great representation of how 2021 is starting off: it awful what happened to the manatee, but it's not as bad as we initially thought!

A clash between fishermen and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) lead to one dead and one injured after the SSCS ship collided with the fishermen's panga boat and split it in two.

Reports of the incident differ on both sides. The fishermen alleged that the Sea Shepherd's ship targeted the panga with the intention of sinking it by collision. Sea Shepperd, and the Mexican Navy officials on board the ship, alledged that the fishermen were throwing homemade bombs, knives, hammers, and other objects at their ship to stop them from doing their work.

Sea Shepherd is working with the Mexican government to retrieve illegal gill nets in the Sea of Cortez to prevent the incidental catch of Vaquitas while fishermen target the totoaba fish.

Vaquitas are critically endangered marine mammals listed on the IUCN Red list and it is estimated that there are only 10 individuals left. The totoaba is also endangered as they have been targeted for their swim bladders in Asian countries as it is believed that it boosts fertility.

January 1st, 2021 marked the first day of the UN's Decade of the Ocean, where every country will participate to launch programs and collect data to better understand how humans interact with the Ocean and determine how we can all live for a better Ocean.

I speak with Talyor Goelz, who works for NOAA and is a KNAUSS Fellow, on her journey to help build this program for the US and inform other government departments and major partners about the Ocean Decade.

We also talk about Talyor's venture into podcasting with the launch of her podcast called The Ocean Decade Show, on The American Shoreline Podcast Network.

As I prepare for the Mindful Conservation Conference talk that I will be putting on, I think about how I would tell someone who would like to start a SciComm Business the steps it would take to be on the path to success.

I use my own company as an example (because that is all I know) to provide some tips on how to start, how to choose your business model, and how to be successful in a digital world.

There are many problems facing the Ocean today: Overfishing, plastic pollution, climate change are just a few of the major ones. However, there are solutions that are currently being implemented and working in particular parts of the world. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are one of those solutions that have helped protect many places from overfishing if implemented properly.

A successful MPA requires the proper funding to assemble stakeholders, plan the MPA, implement the MPA, and enforce and manage the MPA. Simon Cripps, the Executive Director for the Global Marine Program at the Wildlife Conservation Society, penned an article in Mongabay News to discuss the importance of finding sustainable funding to support MPAs beyond the deadlines for specific targets (30% of Oceans under protection).

Simon is concerned that developing countries may not be able to rely on funds from other countries, foundations and/or non-governmental organizations (NGOs). He is worried that countries are at the behest of the political party in power and foundations don't always have the only available to provide support.

Where will they be able to find sustainable funding? Ii would love to hear your ideas.

The last part of my conversation with Cait Mizzi involves how to be more ethically- and environmentally-mindful when it comes to your wardrobe. The Fashion industry has been known to have some pretty low standards in developing countries, including child labour and substandard working conditions. The materials in clothes have also changed to be less environmentally-friendly.

Cait and I discuss the financial and environmental advantages of second-hand clothing as well as slowly building your wardrobe with more expensive, but ethical and sustainable clothing.

Cait Mizzi joins me again for our second part of our conversation on trying to lead a life with less waste. We discuss products that we use every day that come in bad packaging and how I would like to reduce the number of recycling materials I put out once a week as we know many products are not readily recycled.

We strive to live for a better Ocean because it makes our planet healthier. We eat nutritious food because it makes us healthier. Can we have both? Sure. We just need to make a few changes and that can be more difficult than it sounds.

Joining me on today's episode (and the next two episodes) is Cait Mizzi, who is a Functional Nutritionist and the host of the NOSH Podcast, to discuss sustainable living in regards to the food we eat and how it could benefit our health and the Ocean's health.

Cait dives into why specific nutritional lifestyles may not be the best for our health or our planet; why it's important to farm sustainably (especially when it comes to our topsoil usage), and what strategies we should use to get us towards a more sustainable and healthier diet.

This is the second part of my two-part interview with Jasmine Sanders, Executive Director of Our Climate, an organization that mobilizes youth to speak to elected officials about science-based, climate policy for a livable world.

Policy is an important tool to fight the growing contributions to Climate Change. Each person and community feels climate change in their own unique fashion. Certain people will feel it more than others and that is why it is important for everyone to speak to their elected officials about fighting climate change and its impact on communities no matter what the political affiliations.

Jasmine describes Our Climate's work during the past US federal election to educate voters on why it is important to vote "up and down the ballot" and why we need to engage elected officials more once the elections are over.

I feel as though there is a disconnect between citizens and elected officials after, or between, an election. People do not feel comfortable engaging in one on one discussions with elected officials to ensure they convey what it important to them and how they need help from the representative in government.

Have you ever spoken to any of your elected officials (local, state/provincial, and/or federal)? Comment how it went or why you have/haven't.

Jasmine Sanders is the Executive Director of Our Climate, an organization that mobilizes young people to educate elected officials on science-based, equitable climate policy solutions that build a livable world, and she joins me on today's podcast to discuss how her career led her to this position.

This interview is a two-part interview. In part 1 (today's episode), Jasmine tells us about her career and how she made the decisions at specific moments in her life that led her to where she is today. In part 2, we discuss the action that Our Climate supports and how we can better engage with our elected officials through story-telling.

Jasmine is what I like to call a go-getter. She has been highly motivated throughout her career to find a job that will establish her legacy. In this interview, Jasmine tells me of three specific moments that led her to pivot in her career and how she made those pivots.

She discusses how she used networking offline and online (through LinnkedIn) to build a support group of professionals in each area of her career. Now she is the Executive Director of an organization that engages with the masses to talk to their elected officials.

The methods Jasmine used to pivot and build her career are often overlooked by today's marine conservationists. This is a great episode to listen to if you are seeking a career in any environmental field.

Stay tuned for Part 2 in the next episode.

In my quest to become more sustainable, I've discovered companies that are registered B-Corporations. These corporations strive to be socially, economically and environmentally ethical with their business. The businesses usually use their mission to drive something special such as providing clothes for the needy or protecting the environment. People buy from these companies because they believe in their mission.

I recently found out that a company for which I order their products on a regular basis has become certified as a B-Corp and have teamed up with Terracyle to truly recycle their products into long-lasting products such as park benches. I am a consultant for this company and I can help you get set up with buying these products if you use similar items. Now you know that the products can be truly recycled and reused.

Here is a link to the list of products that can be used by Terracyle:

If you use me as a consultant, the money will go directly back into the Network of Podcasts so we can work to reach and inspire more people to live for a better Ocean.

The second part of the episode was an update on Ontario's Bill 229, which was a budget bill to help with the economic effects of COVID-19; however, it contains a clause that took away the powers of Conservation Authorities. Take a listen to find out what happened.

Have you ever looked at your dog and wonder "How would you ever survive in the wild?!" I know my dogs are super spoiled and would not survive long in the wild even though they still have their predator instincts. Imagine what the circumstances must have been like when the first wild dogs were domesticated by humans. It was such a long time ago that it would be interesting to see how that would happen now.

Well, according to new research, there may be a way to find out how and why domestication happens using a small tropical reef fish and mysid shrimp as an example.

Longfin damselfish curate algae farms on their piece of the reef in Belize, which is in itself incredible. Researchers observed an interesting presence of mysid shrimp above the algae farm. The presence was found in multiple places on different parts of the reef, but the presence was in the same area as the longfin damselfish a majority of the time.

Researchers conducted a few experiments to conclude that the mysid shrimp are protected by the damselfish while the algae is fertilized by the waste of the mysid shrimp providing a better quality algae product.

More details on the episode.

My conclusion: The Ocean Is Fantastic!
