Earth Day is a time where we reflect on how humans can become more sustainable. It's a time where people and organizations release optimistic reports or awareness campaigns to get people thinking about the Earth; however, this year was a bit different. Michael Moore produced and released The Planet Of The Humans, a documentary that did the exact opposite of what Earth Day is supposed to do.

It tried to bring down the green movement by bringing up outdated misinformation...and many people bought it.

I reviewed this documentary for this episode, but I hope to get someone more qualified to come on the podcast and provide more detail about the claims made in this movie.

A new study has revealed that the Narwhal will be vulnerable in the future to climate change consequences of increased sea temperature and melting sea ice. The vulnerability comes after the study found low genetic diversity among the three populations of Narwhals.

Take a listen to the episode and read the article below to get more informed about the vulnerability of Narwhals.

A few weeks ago, I saw a post by my friend and colleague, Emily Cunningham, about a huge project that she and her project partners just won. They developed the proposal for over 3 years and finally saw the results, over 2 million pound prize awarded to the project that would engage local communities in the Northeast of the UK with their Oceans.

I invited Emily to come on the podcast to tell us why it's important to have projects that reconnect the local community with their Oceans.

Have you connected with your coastline (lake or ocean)? Share your experience in the Speak Up For Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/group.

What happens to fish producers when their customers close up shop and their supply chains fold? They need to pivot and identify a new market to ensure their survival. That's exactly what the Cornwall Fisheries Community did with their partners Mindfully Wired Communications and their Director, Katrina Ryan, is on the podcast to tell us how they did it.

Would you buy seafood directly from the fishers? Share your thoughts in the Speak Up For Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/group.

There are many trailblazers out there that are pushing the Marine Conservation sector outside of its comfort zone to move the sector forward in a positive manner. They don't always get the credit they deserve, but they definitely push the boundaries.

I discuss some of my favourite Marine Conservation Trailblazers and challenge more of you to do the same.

What are you doing to further Marine Conservation? Share your experience in the Speak Up For Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/group.

Academic professors have a reputation that they stay in their "ivory towers" and do their research; however, Dr. Joshua Stoll, who is an Assistant Professor of Fisheries at the University of Maine, is also a fisherman and the co-founder of Local Catch. Local Catch is a network of community-supported fisheries that share information to help empower local fisheries.

The stories Josh tells me in this interview are wonderful and goes to show that there is a need to bring fisheries back to local communities.

How do you support local fisheries? Share your experience in the Speak Up For Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/group.

I've spent over 15 years on social media, more than 10 of those years involved science communication. Over those years, I crafted a strategy through many experiences to engage with people on social media about science that I now use today. I should mention that my strategy is constantly evolving as I believe everyone's strategy should evolve.

I focus on how to create a positive educational point out of a negative experience on interaction with someone who is frustrating you.

What is your approach to Science Communication on Social Media? Share your strategy in the Speak Up For Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/group.

A decade ago, we witnessed one of the most devastating oil spills in the world as the Deepwater Horizon oil platform leaked oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The oil platform was owned by BP, who was fined $4.5 billion for the spill and the damage it caused to the Gulf of Mexico. $500 million dollars was granted to a coalition of agencies, non-profit organizations, and academic institutes to study the effects of the spill on the habitats and the ocean floor.

An article in the Conversation was published recently that revealed fish livers and the ocean bottom contain oil from the BP oil spill, ten years later. Listen to the episode for more results.

Bumble Bee Tuna was recently purchased by FCF, a Taiwan-based fishing company that has been accused of IUU (Illegal, Unregulated, and Unreported) Fishing and human rights violations in regards to fisheries (i.e. fisheries slavery). A Greenpeace report described the human rights violation cases that were as recent as 2019 by surveying migrant fishermen on three vessels tied to FCF.

Bumble Bee Tuna owns a number of other brands that you may buy on a regular basis (check out this link for the details: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bumble_Bee_Foods sold on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/s?k=bumble+bee+tuna&crid=ZZM7S5VAZDUA&sprefix=bumble+bee+%2Caps%2C169&ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_11)

Should we be writing our government officials to let them know that we don't want these companies to sell their products when they don't treat fishers properly? Share your thoughts in the Speak Up For Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/group.

There is a scientific review paper out that was authored by a number of high profiled marine scientists that say we can turn the poor health of the Ocean around by 2050 based on conservation success stories of animals such as the Humpback whale, manatee, and other charismatic ocean species.  That's great news, right?!

We will need to double our efforts to fight a number of issues such as climate change, ocean plastic pollution, and overfishing to name a few in order to change the tide on the Oceans.

The Netflix Series called Tiger King has gone viral more than the Coronavirus. It's a bizarre docuseries about a Private Big Cat Zoo owner who is charged with the attempted murder of the owner of a Big Cat Sanctuary. People can't stop talking about it, but they are focusing on the wrong thing. They are focusing on the people and not the idea of having big cats in private zoos that are looked after by unqualified people.

The docuseries also compares private zoos to sanctuaries and makes you question the validity of a rescue sanctuary.

Do you think there is a difference between private zoos and sanctuaries?  Share your thoughts in the Speak Up For Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/group.

Trying to attain a career in Marine Conservation or Conservation, in general, is very difficult. There aren't many jobs available and there is little funding. There are many people struggling, but the struggle can be lonely as the business is very isolated with fieldwork in remote areas for long periods of time.

One young conservationist had enough and decided to let her feelings out. What happened next was inspirational and gave birth to the website: https://lonelyconservationists.com/

A great Mongabay article describes a 5-fold increase of Humpback Whales in less than two decades in a Multi-Use Protected Area in Chile called the Francisco Coloane Multi-Use Marine And Coastal Protected Area.

In 2003, 40 Humpback whales were observed in the MPA compared to 190 individuals in 2017. The same study revealed a feeding area for the Humpback Whales was in a 15 square km area that was closed to fishing. A huge success.

At some point in your Marine Conservation Career, you will face the question of whether one species is worth more than the other. Science alone will not be able to answer the question. A team of interdisciplinary scientists may be able to answer the question; however, the results may not agree with the moral stance from the public.

The article that I cover today explores this idea using grey seals and cod on the Atlantic coast as an example.

We are living in unprecedented times, where the Coronavirus has taken over our lives to the point where many of us are living in self-quarantine and practicing social distancing.

People are buying up tons of toiler paper and disinfectant wipes to ensure they do not catch or spread the virus. Others are hoarding all sorts of products.

The amount of purchasing can lead to the wasteful use of some products so I wanted to create this episode to ensure we are still living for a better Ocean by thinking sustainably with our wallets during these uncertain times.

Stay Safe!

Pacific Salmon species love cool, clean waters and they are able to enjoy those waters all throughout British Columbia, Canada. Glacial retreating due to warmer air temperatures has revealed many suitable habitats for Pacific Salmon species; however, those glaciers are getting smaller and some have stopped revealing suitable habitat. It's all due to Climate Change that increased the speed of melting. Less habitat is a bit of a concern to researchers.

Some Pacific Salmon species will not do as well in warmer conditions. Listen to the episode to find out which species will do well and which ones won't.

The times of a single-page cover letter are over. In Marine Conservation, your cover letter needs to include specific information that will help the person reviewing your application to decide whether you warrant a closer look (i.e. an interview).

I give you tips on how to write a cover letter that will get you closer to getting the interview. It worked for me. Once I started using this strategy, I was able to get more interviews on applications that I submitted.

Do you use the same strategy when writing your cover letter? Share your thoughts in the Marine Science And Conservation Careers Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/career.

Do you remember when the Senator brought the snowball onto the Senate floor to demonstrate that Climate Change was not real? I sure do. You will find out my thoughts about the event on this Throwback episode to episode 8, my first solo/non-interview episode.

It was a time where President Obama declared Climate Change as the biggest threat to the United States. That claim was backed up by the Navy, NASA and other scientific associations.

However, Republican politicians were fighting any claim that Climate Change was real...and nothing has changed except that the Republicans are now in charge.

Do you think the US government will ever properly address Climate Change? Share your thoughts in the Speak Up For Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/group.

This episode may be the most powerful episode that we have ever published on Speak Up For The Ocean Blue podcast. It's all because of my guest today, Chelsea Gray, a PhD student who studies basking sharks.

Unfortunately, we are not discussing Chelsea's PhD today as Chelsea will be telling us about something that happened to her a couple of years ago that was terrible. She will also be telling us what happened after as she tried to seek justice. You have to listen to this story to believe it.

It's quite frustrating when you spend so much time applying for a job and then hear nothing back as to whether you go an interview or your application was even close.

I was able to find success in applying for jobs where I received interviews. There was a point in time where I was getting a lot of interviews. IT was all in how I applied for the job.

In this episode, I talk about how to identify whether a job add is right for you to apply for the job you want and that fits you.

The Sea Grant program has always been an important program for citizens that live within a Sea Grant state. The program conducts programs that are focused on finding solutions for state problems. In this throwback episode, Bill Wyse and I discussed the programs related to the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.

Also, there is a clip of my oldest daughter, who was 7 at the time, telling me about her favourite animal...that choked me up a bit.

Indonesia has the second-largest amount of pollution entering the ocean and its citizens are tired of it. They want the government to implement better waster management systems. The movement for a better system is driven by the youth of Indonesia, which has worked with the government to recently ban plastic bags, styrofoam, and plastic straws in July 2019. More needs to be done though.

Listen to the episode for more information.

It took me a while to figure out my Marine Conservation Career Path. 18 years to be exact. I experimented quite a bit with jobs in different sectors, but I never really found the job that equalled my passion for Marine Conservation. Full disclosure, my path was restricted to being a Marine Biologist living in Ontario, which required me to be creative. That creativity spawned this very podcast and fulfilled my passion and path for my Marine Conservation Career.

There are many of you in the audience who are following in my footsteps. You are not looking to follow your career path in Marine Conservation because all you are doing is searching for ANYTHING in Marine Conservation. It's the same way I started my career. It's time we change that.

I talk about setting your career path to ensure that you know exactly which jobs you need to fulfill your passion. Take a listen and let me know what you think in the Marine Science and Conservation Careers Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/career.

SeaWorld has been through a lot since the release of a documentary that exposed the truth behind marine mammal captivity. Blackfish was released in 2013 and caused SeaWorld to change its business practices surrounding Orcas; however, they were sued for allegedly downplaying the effect of Blackfish on their reporting to investors.

They had to pay quite a bit of money but potentially got off without admitting to being guilty.

Now, Seaworld is starting to earn money again after promoting free beer in Orlando and rides in California. They still have Orcas but they don't do shows nor do they profit off of the Orca reproduction business because it is now illegal.

No Orca shows confirm that the best way to see Orcas is in the wild with a reputable Whale Watching outfit.

Another Throwback Wednesday is upon us. The 5th episode of the Speak Up For The Ocean Blue Podcast was with Dr. Ellen Prager. She has pretty much accomplished everything of which most Marine Biologists can only dream. She's lectured, she's been the Executive Director of an Institute, she's authored papers, and she's authored novels for tweens.

I was very happy to interview Ellen on all of her accomplishments, but I was super excited for her to talk about how coral reefs can benefit Human Health.

Check out the latest of Ellen's accomplishments at her website: http://ellenprager.com/

The Turks And Caicos are overfishing their conchs and tourists are worried that they can't get their conch for dinner anymore. That was a bit sarcastic.

Unfortunately, the demand for conchs outside of the beautiful Islands of the Turks and Caicos is driving the population to extinction and people are calling for an All-Out Ban on fishing for the once plentiful mollusc.

I am very happy to present to you Alex Tilley, who I interviewed in episode 4 about his organization called Talking Oceans. Much of our conversation covered the manner in which marine conservationists should approach helping local communities in foreign countries. We also discussed how Talking Oceans was approaching Science Communication.

I was able to catch up with Alex at the International Marine Conservation Congress in Malaysia a couple of years ago, where we chatted about his new endeavors and being a father living in East Bangor.

We know that Sea-Level Rise will reshape the world's coastlines physically, but it is rare that we see studies that predict how local communities will be reshaped from a socio-economic perspective. A recent study out of the University of Southern California did examine how inland counties and cities could be impacted by coastal migrants moving away from their flooded homes.

The Government Of Canada introduced the creation of a new Aquaculture Act, which is long overdue, that was to be introduced in 2025. I was very excited to hear the great news; however, some people are not satisfied with how long it's going to take.

Episode Where I spoke about the Mandate Letter: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/speak-up-for-the-ocean-blue/id1010962669?i=1000459936009

What type of music do coral fish like? Well, a group of researchers from the University of Exeter found out recently. The researchers probably didn't play Stairway To Heaven to attract young juvenile fish to coral reefs; however, they did play the sounds of healthy reefs to attract young, vibrant fish to unhealthy reefs in hopes that it would activate something within the reef to start its way back to good health.

The noise worked because fish came to the reefs more than they did to reefs where no noise was played.

Listen to the episode to find out why, and find out what noises constitute a healthy reef.

Do you think the coral reefs will recover with the newly attracted young fish? Share your thoughts in the Speak Up For Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/group.

Marine Conservation is all about collaboration because collaboration leads to results. This episode presents a recent case where adaptive management, collaboration among government, research institutes, and citizen science groups show great results for a Nassau Grouper aggregation in Little Cayman.

Find out how an aggregation site for Grouper spawning tripled in size within 10 years.

Our Seas Coalition has called for Scotland to ban trawling within 3 miles of the coast to ensure the sustainability of fisheries for the future. The Coalition is made up of various stakeholders including marine ecotourism firms, fishing communities, salmon conservationists and others.

There are other fishing groups that oppose the ban as they feel the current system of voluntary closures and other measures will suffice.

Climate Change is destroying our planet and altering our Oceans. There is no doubt about it. We need to change the way we live and we need leadership from governments and corporations to help us change.

One company is leading the charge to help us change the way we choose our food by providing carbon footprint labels on their products so you can see the impact your food has on the environment. Quorn is a company that makes meat alternative foods and wants to help its consumers make better choices in the food they choose to eat to protect the environment.

Link to article: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/jan/09/quorn-to-be-first-major-brand-to-introduce-carbon-labelling

In keeping with the food theme for today's episode, I read another article on how one company is creating food in a lab from bacteria and water to offer a FarmFree experience.

Link to article: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/jan/08/lab-grown-food-destroy-farming-save-planet

I'm taking you back to my first episode on the Speak Up For The Ocean Blue Podcast because we are less than 50 episodes away from hitting 1000 episodes.

In my first episode, I spoke to Dr. Judith Weis about her new book (at the time) entitled "Marine Pollution." It's a great book that breaks down marine pollution sources and effects on the environment in a digestible manner.

The Ocean influences the climate and when the Ocean changes in temperature, then the climate changes. Unfortunately, climate change is making the Australian wildfires worse to the point where the entire country seems to be on fire...and it's only going to get worse over the weekend.

Listen to the podcast to find out how the Ocean is inducing the wildfires and what needs to happen to stop the extreme fires from happening again.

How do you think the Australian citizens should get the Prime Minister of Australia to take climate action? Share your thoughts in the Speak Up For Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/group.
