Dr. Lyne Morissette joins me on Ocean Talk Friday to report back on her time at the Earth Optimism Summit, which she said changed her life!!! The Earth Optimism Summit happened last weekend sandwiching the March for Science in Washington, D.C. Both events were huge successes according to many attendees who were able to do both. Dr. Lyne Morissette, who has been on this podcast numerous times, was able to attend the Summit and was kind enough to come on and share her experience. Listen to why she thinks Marine Science and Conservation needs to put out more optimism in their messages. Enjoy the podcast! Support Science and Climate Change Science Research by buying our Graphic T-shirts "Science Can't Be Silenced" and "Climate Change is here, it's real, it's time to act." The March for Science is over, but Climate Change Research must continue so we are extending our campaign to support Climate Change Science Research as a Speak Up For Blue Community. $5 of every shirt purchased will be donated to support the research of Dr. Michelle LaRue, who researches how Climate Change affects various animals in the Antarctic and Arctic systems. http://www.speakupforblue.com/shop Are you looking to change the way you eat for a better health and environment? I am solo today for Ocean Talk Friday so I decided to speak on two major events happening in Washington, DC this weekend: Earth Optimism Summit and the March for Science. Friend of the podcast, Dr. Michelle LaRue, will be speaking at the Earth Optimism Summit as well as many other speakers from all over the world. I chat about the Summit and all the wonderful topics that will be covered over the three days. On Saturday, Earth Day will be met with a March for Science by a number of people who want to tell governments around the world that Science is important in decision making, especially when it comes to the environment. People have been talking about not Marching in the podcast because they don't want the public to think that science is politicized. I talk about my thoughts on the March and why I am for it. Enjoy the podcast! Support Science and Climate Change Science Research by buying our Graphic T-shirts "Science Can't Be Silenced" and "Climate Change is here, it's real, it's time to act." The science community and its supporters are Marching for Science on April 22nd, Earth Day, in Washington, D.C. Show your Support for science by wearing the T-Shirts during the march. Not going to the March for Science, wear the T-Shirt, take a pic of you wearing it and post it on social media with the hastag #MarchforScience. $5 of every shirt purchased will be donated to support the research of Dr. Michelle LaRue, who researches how Climate Change affects various animals in the Antarctic and Arctic systems. http://www.speakupforblue.com/shop Are you looking to change the way you eat for a better health and environment? Farah Obaidullah is a Marine Scientist who is ensuring women in our field have a voice for equality. I was extremely proud to have Farah on the podcast to discuss her platform that she has built to provide women a chance to meet and share their work with a common voice. If you are a male or female ocean conservationist then you will want to hear this episode. Even if you are not in the Ocean Conservation Field, this issue will still apply to you as it applies across many fields. Enjoy the podcast! Dr. Michelle LaRue joins me on Ocean Talk Friday to discuss a number of topics going in in Ocean Conservation. This is Michelle's first Ocean Talk Friday and she killed it! We switched up the normal structure of the episode this week where we discussed 1 article and 3 topics that are hot in the Marine Science and Conservation Community. Michelle starts the episode off by discussing the launch of her new Citizen Science Project about quantifying the Weddell seal population in the Antarctic. Here are the topics: 1) Climate Change could affect the way Polar Bears hunt seals; Enjoy the podcast! I am joined by Clark McNulty who co-founded Oceans Global with his siblings after a family tragedy to help the ocean and people. After their brother Kirk passed away from a drug overdose, the McNulty family wanted to expand on his legacy as an Ocean Lover (a water classman, surfer and inspired by everything ocean) and help people who were struggling with drug addiction get better. They created Oceans Global, which is a non-profit organization that builds programs to help patients of rehabilitation facilities become inspired by Ocean Activities and Conservation projects. Listen in as Clark describes the program and how Oceans Global works to serve the Ocean and People. Enjoy the podcast! Wow, 300 episodes! Publishing 300 episodes is something that I never thought that I would be able to do. A year and a half ago, I published my first podcast to help people understand what was happening with the Ocean and what solutions they could implement to help resolve the problem. Now, after 300 episodes and over 70K downloads, the Speak Up for Blue Community has grown into a force that is out to protect the Ocean. Nathan Johnson, Dr. Lyne Morissette and Dr. Edd Hind-Ozan join me on this special Ocean Talk Friday to discuss the following topics: 1) Should we pay to get experience in Marine Science and Conservation to benefit our careers? Doug Parsons is a Climate Change Adaptation Expert and the host of the podcast America Adapts, A Climate Change Podcast. We talk about Climate Change in a Trump world and how to focus on adaptation. I am delighted to have Doug on the podcast as he is a scientist and another podcaster (we podcasters have to stick together). I think it's critical for Doug's podcast to exist because we need to go beyond the faux debate of whether humans are contributing significantly to climate change and discuss the ways that we can adapt to the consequences and reduce our influence. Manatee numbers are up, big time, but should they be down listed from Endangered to Threatened? I discuss this on this episode. Manatees went from 600 to 6000 individuals in 40 years.
