Originally, I was going to do an entrie episode on the State of the Ocean in 2019, but I was worried it would be too depressing. Therefore, I decided to add the outlook of the Oceans for 2020 in the same episode to inspire hope.

Do you agree with my assessment of the Ocean in 2019 and my outlook for 2020? Let me know in the Speak Up For Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/group.

I thought I would name some ways that you can take climate change action at home so that you know you are living for a better Ocean. In this episode, I talk about reducing/eliminating single-use plastic; buying second-hand clothes; and, buying inexpensive technology to reduce your home energy demand.

Australia is undergoing an unprecedented Heat Wave and it is causing mass fish kills along the Western Australian Coastline. Air Temperatures above 50C are occurring for over 5 days, which has never happened in this region since they started monitoring air temperature in 1993 via satellites.

Higher temperatures do occur during the summer, but not until mid-summer in February. Higher temperatures in December worry researchers as they have never observed these temperatures this early.

Higher temperatures and mass fish kills make you wonder why more governments are not taking more Climate Change action.

I hope that protests such as the Climate Strikes will inspire more people who want action to reduce Green House Gases will run for office in the near future.

Would you run for office so you could have an influence on Climate Action Policy in your country? Share your thoughts in the Speak Up For Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/group.

I love hearing from the audience on how the podcast has affected you in different ways and/or what you thought about the podcast/episode.

I decided to talk about a message I received from a listen about how the podcast has affected her life. I love positive stories like this.

I also discussed feedback from another listener on Monday's episode (episode 941), where I used eating lifestyles as an example for the point I was trying to make about Science Communication. The listener made some great points and I gave them my response.

Fighting Ocean Plastics, Implementing a NEW and IMPROVED Fisheries Act, and adding more Marine Protected Areas in Canada are just some parts of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Mandate Letter to Minister Jordan for the Fisheries, Oceans, and Coasts Guard Ministry.

It is wonderful to hear of the new steps the government will take over the next few years to help secure Canada's Ocean Environment.

Take a listen to get to know the specifics. I think you will like what you hear.

Often times, science communicators are trying to undo the damage caused by a documentary or a certain President that spews utter garbage that is wrong on a specific environmental subject.

Science communicators need to work at getting ahead of specific subject matters to ensure that the proper information backed by scientific evidence gets out to the public before other people manipulate the science in order to prove their point.

I was listening to an episode of a podcast called Oppo (it's a Canadian political podcast that I listen to on a regular basis), where the main topic was on Nuclear Energy. The conversation quickly turned to other forms of energy such as renewable energy, fossil fuels as well as nuclear energy.

Listening to the episode got me thinking of what would the energy sector look like in the future, especially since countries as focusing on reducing climate change.

Take a listen to the episode to find out what I was thinking.

Four NFL Athletes are using the program called "My Cleats, My Cause" Initiative to spread awareness of Ocean Issues by wearing custom-designed cleats to show their love for the Ocean. I LOVE this cause as the NFL is arguably the biggest sport in the US, North America, and maybe even the world (the Superbowl is the biggest sporting event in the world).

Listen to how happy I am to be able to talk about Oceans and Football during the same episode, especially when there is a San Francisco 49er in the mix!

Research has shown that Oxygen levels are declining in the open ocean and along the coasts all across the world. This research does not paint a pretty picture for the future of our oceans as deoxygenation is going to negatively affect biological and biogeochemical ocean processes.

I had a thought about science communication the other day. I noticed that it's always the same people that speak up for conservation. The people who speak up are great, but it's always the same people. I feel as though we need new people to start speaking out.

Great Thunberg is relatively new to the game and she has done a great job in speaking up for doing something about Climate Change.

In January 2020, I will focus more on helping people to Speak Up For The Ocean Blue. This includes teaching an online course for Duke University on podcasting for environmental science. If you or the organization you are working for are interested, then sign up here: http://www.speakupforblue.com/duke.

Indonesia is known for its beautiful beaches and clear ocean waters that are visited by millions of people every year. They are also known for blowing up boats who fish illegally in their waters, or so they used to be...maybe...we aren't sure yet.

A new Fisheries Minister is contemplating the rule of blowing up boats is they are caught fishing illegally and replace it with boat seizures that are either auctioned off or given to local fishers.

Some environmental groups are worried that the latter won't be much of a deterrent for illegal fishing. What say you? Share your thoughts in the Speak Up For Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/group.

I had the wonderful opportunity to create a podcast segment for my friend and fellow podcaster, Clay Groves who hosts the Fish Nerd Podcast. It is a podcast for Recreational Fishers to share fishing stories, have some fun, and discuss conservation.

Clay took part in National Podcast Posting Month (NaPodPoMo), where he posted a podcast episode every day during the month of November.

Clay asked me to submit a segment for his podcast. I recorded and submitted an episode of a recent article written by David Shiffman (https://earther.gizmodo.com/it-s-pathetic-world-fails-to-protect-one-of-the-most-e-1840056618?fbclid=IwAR2ofmNDQnPQtnpCsqiXOtwQOKXnTnIdxlqW5PKt-LYLhfyweXBylRIGMQ8) on the rejection of advice from scientists to protect mako sharks during fisheries such as tuna.

Today's episode is that segment. I wanted to share it with you as I thought it was important.

You can check out Clay's podcast on:

We had a slight problem that we never encountered here on the Speak Up For Blue Team: We were asked to take down an episode because our guest's boss was worried that the information that was discussed briefly on an episode was going to affect the future funding from a grantor.

We didn't agree with the boss, but we didn't want our guests to be put in a more difficult position than they were already in.

The Speak Up For Blue Team (with 7 podcasts) has communicated a lot of science, but we encounter barriers from time to time.

In this episode, I give you some ways to overcome those barriers and give reasons why there shouldn't be any barriers at all.

Do you encounter barriers to Science Communication often? Share your experiences in the Speak Up For Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/group.

Taylor Swift does not get fully paid for all of her past songs that she wrote, recorded, and performed all over the world. Someone came un and bought the publishing rights to her songs and is now richer for it.

A similar situation happens every day in fisheries and transferable quotas are to blame. Listen to the episode to find out more.

Do you think governments should get rid of transferable quotas? Let me know what you think in the Speak Up For Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/group.

Researchers have found that rabbitfish that normally occupy coral reef habitats are moving to cooler waters with kelp forests in which they are eating all of the kelp. Researchers are worried that the fish will leave the forests barren and ruin the habitat for other species.

Educating the public on how to change their behaviour from using single-use plastics to using more sustainable alternatives is the key to reducing the amount of plastic that ends up in the Ocean.

We keep seeing articles about people trying to clean up the Oceans. There are even companies that are built off of this premise; however, cleaning the Ocean is our last ditch effort and does not mean the Oceans will ever be clean from plastic. We need to stop plastics from getting into the Ocean by refusing single-use plastic. The best way to do this is to focus on educating the public and change their behaviour.

Climate Change is rearing its ugly head in Venice, Italy as the city is entirely submerged in about 5 feet of water. The tide level has broken records three times in one week whereas it would only get high once or twice a year.

I discuss what the flooding means for Venice and how we need to act now for a better future.

Invasive species pose a problem to many coastlines across the globe and managers/researchers are always trying to find ways to get rid of them. Researchers at the University of Maine are trying to build are market for high-valued Invasive Green Crab products in the Maine area to help manage the invasive species.

I discuss the various products that are being developed and the challenges that make it difficult to reach their goal.

You may have seen a plethora of articles and political announcements on tree planting to mitigate (reduce) climate change by absorbing more Carbon Dioxide. As news broke about the destruction of the Amazon Rainforest a few months ago, scientists reiterated the need for trees to absorb carbon dioxide (CO2), a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) that contributes to Climate Change. However, trees aren't the only plants that absorb CO2. Seagrasses may even be a better plant type to absorb the GHG.

In this episode, I discuss the benefit of protecting Seagrass habitats and how countries should consider restoring these useful habitats to help attain the goals set out in the Paris Climate Change Agreement.

There was a great article in The Conservation written by Charlotte Eve Davies about her research on a Spiny Lobster Disease called PaV1. The virus kills lobsters that are infected; however, evidence shows that the virus is contained in algal and seagrass meadows as it doesn't affect adult spiny lobsters.

Listen to the episode to find out more about the virus and the influence of seagrass meadows.

When I speak to people about their Marine Conservation Careers, I try to recommend specific actions they should take to increase their chances of getting a job and starting/continuing their career. One of my most popular suggestions tends to be looking into the Coastal Environmental Management Program at Duke University.

Today, I am posting my interview with two students from the CEM program to offer you a chance to hear about their experience in the program. I sit down with Kat Morris and Cam Adams, two second-year students in the 2-year program, that give us a very detailed profile of their experience in the program.

If you are interested in the program, please click the link below for registration information:

https://nicholas.duke.edu/admissions/how-apply

You can also email the admissions office if you have a specific set of questions: admissions@nicholas.duke.edu

Would you consider doing a professional degree in Coastal Environmental Management? Let us know why in the Speak Up For Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/group.

I am a little nervous today to publish this episode as it is the first time that I am part of a podcast where it is highly produced. I am a producer on a great podcast called the Salish Shes Podcast hosted by Raye Evrard and Beth Pike.

We launched a series recently that explores how the Orcas of the Salish Seas became Endangered over a short time period (60 years).

In this episode, Raye and Beth speak to Lynda Mapes (reporter from the Seattle Times) and Ellie Kinley (Lummi fisher and community member) to discover how the views of the people on the Orcas in the Salish Sea changed over the course of 60 years.

Members of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) met to discuss a number of marine topics for managing the Antarctic. Unfortunately, a Marine Protected Area that would protect 1 million square kilometres of the East Antarctic was not agreed upon because some member nations did not agree with the lack of a research monitoring plan (which is normally implemented after the designation of an MPA).

Listen to the episode for more information.

There are a number of countries that have either banned or plan to ban single-use plastics as their citizens are demanding that we stop adding plastic pollution to the Ocean. Consumers are also demanding that manufacturers create more options for less waste of their products such as refill stations; however, some manufacturers are not quite sure if their consumers are ready for refill stations based on attempts in the past.

Listen to the episode for more details.

It's amazing when the science community announces the discovery of a new species, especially when it's a new beaked whale. I mean, how can you miss a beaked whale?

This opportunity of discovery came during the grim event of stranding of 6 beaked whale species. Some of the whales seemed shorter than others and were a different colour, which prompt researchers to investigate further.

Find out more details of the study by listening to the podcast.

As I reach my mid-career point, I often reflect on how my career has impacted the Marine Conservation community. Did I help solve some problems for people? Did I provide the resources that I thought were important for people to succeed in Marine Conservation?

These are the questions that I probably should have asked myself 20 .years ago when I was starting my career. I don't have regrets in my career as everything I did lead me to a point in my career where I feel that I am having an impact on Marine Conservation; however, I am not getting paid a career-type wage to do Marine Conservation podcasting and I don't feel guilty about it.

You know that guilt. It's the guilty feeling that you get when you think of working in a job/career that might be able to make you money to pay the bills, but it's not in Marine Conservation. The guilt you feel when you think of doing anything but science, the subject that you paid a ton of money to learn for 4, 6, 10 years (and still paying off!). It's the same guilt I felt when I considered leaving the paid career of Marine Conservation to podcast for Marine Conservation and impact more lives than I ever could think about doing in my full-time job. Letting go of the guilt made me happy!

Take a listen to the episode for more details on how to let go of that guilt.

The City of Del Mar, California is working on a plan to adapt to Sea Level Rise caused by Climate Change. City planners must get the plan approved by the California Coastal Commission in order to implement the plan; however, the Coastal Commission and the City do not agree on the way Del Mar should adapt to Sea Level Rise.

Del Mar does not think a managed retreat (where the City would buy properties from homeowners as well as a relocation spot.) will work as their properties are more expensive than the surrounding area and the City could not afford the amount necessary to buy the properties.

I wanted to highlight the difficulty of preparing plans like the one discussed during this episode.

The Ocean Clean Up Project has released an update that their prototype is catching plastic in the Pacific Ocean Gyre. Great news! Unfortunately, Dr. Rebecca Helm noticed that the prototype wasn't just catching plastic. It was catching small animals too. Just as was predicted by many scientists.

Rebecca mentions that the animals being caught are part of a neuston ecosystem that she describes as a floating coral reef

I discuss whether this prototype from the Ocean Clean Up Project should be used at all.

Do you think the prototype should be used? Share your thoughts in the Speak Up For Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/group.

Today's episode is focused on an interaction that a friend of mine had on social media recently. Someone said that my friend was not a true scientist if she wasn't collecting data in the field or in a lab. This claim simply isn't true and has no bearing on the issue about which my friend was posting.

The fact of the matter is that running an effective Marine Conservation project often requires professionals from all different professionals backgrounds to achieve a common goal. It is unfortunate that some people think otherwise (inside and outside of the industry); however, it is even more important for you to know that it takes all kinds of professionals from across the globe to protect our Oceans.

I was invited to give a talk yesterday at a private school for grades 7 and 8 students. They had a project that included the topic of Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fisheries, an important and delicate issue in the Oceans.

After the talk, I thought that it would be important to discuss IUU Fishing on the podcast because the issue is so important. I talk about 8 reasons why you should care about IUU Fisheries. The topic was adapted from an article of the same title found here.

After I spoke about sustainable and Zero Waste stores last week, I got some listener feedback that I thought I would share because I thin kit's important to tell people where some of these sustainable options exist.

Arleen Paredes, a great Speak Up For The Ocean Blue Listener and a Nurse in New York City, contacted me after she listened to the episode to share the stores that she has discovered that are more sustainable. I share those options with you on this episode.

I also discuss Podcasting for Conservation and how that has changed my life for the better and how it lead me to launch podcasts for other organizations to allow them to share the work they do and the passion of the staff that does the work to their audience.

If you would like to launch your podcast or you would like help with your existing podcast, then please feel free to email me: andrew@speakupforblue.com.

The Canadian Government, controlled by the Liberals, bought a pipeline for $4.5 Billion. Environmentalists were angry that the government did not fulfill their promise in reducing climate change; however, is that what is really going on?

An opinion article in the National Observer goes over the $70 Billion dollar Climate plan that the Canadian Government is undergoing in an Oil & Gas dominated economy.

A really good article was published in the Tyee recently, where the author, Andrew Nikiforuk, spoke with Global Fisheries Expert, Dr. Daniel Pauly, and asked him what he would change about global fisheries if he were a Global Fisheries Minister. Daniel had 3 things that he would change:

1) End Government Subsidies For Industrial Fisheries Fleet;
2) Create Fishing Reserves For Small, Local Fisheries; and,
3) Establish No-Go Zones To Protect Fish.

The Climate Strike has inspired a number of young people to participate in the strike as well as participate in conversations on Climate Change with their parents and other adults that may or may not "believe" in Climate Change.

To help the newer people to this conversation, ScienceAlert wrote an article that debunks 5 of the Climate Denier statements that refute Human-Causing Climate Change. I decided to make it in audio form thanks to the article in the link below:

There was an article that I recently read that explained how climate change was melting the snow on mount Everest, exposing the trash left by climbers as well as dead mount climbers who did not succeed in reaching the peak.

It got me thinking of all the places that we humans like to explore, which opens up the potential for us to ruin every nice place on Earth.

I discuss how we need to do better to live for a better Ocean. Do you agree with my thought? Share your thoughts in the Speak Up For Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/group.

It's like a scene straight out of IT, when Penny Wise turns into a monster and you see all of his nasty teeth. Not many people would compare the mouth and esophagus of a Sea Turtle to a fictional serial killer monster that is topping the box office at the moment, but it is all I can think of while looking into that mouth.

The mouth of a Sea Turtle is full of sharp barbs that face inward. Guess what they are for and listen to the episode to find out their function.

Do you think the barbs are a smart adaptation? Let me know in the facebook group (I will also share pictures in the facebook group): http://www.speakupforblue.com/group.

Japan is considering the option to dump some of its nuclear waste into the Ocean as storage space is running out. South Korea is looking to avoid that situation and engaging in talks to find alternative solutions.

I am not looking forward to seeing the "fake map" about radiation spreading around social media again as it tends to do once or twice a year.

I speak with Guillermo Ortuno, a Ph.D. student at Duke University, to find out how meetings at the United Nations work to better manage the high seas by making existing agreements better.

Guillermo wrote a paper with some colleagues about how there are more than 4000 fish species that are not managed under the current agreements because they are not designated as commercially important.

We talk about the difference between a policy brief and a peer-reviewed paper and its effectiveness.

President Donald Trump made a mistake when he said Hurricane Dorian was going to hit Alabama. He could have admitted that he made a mistake and that would have been the end of it; however, in true Trump style, he did not admit to the mistake. Instead, the President had the Secretary of Commerce tell the acting director of NOAA that there will be no more contradictory posting against the president even though he is wrong...

The summer of 2019 has been a terrible year for the Endangered Northern Right Whale. 6 individual whales were killed in Canada within 48 hours due to ship strikes or fishing gear entanglement. The whale population cannot endure summers similar to this one as there are only 400 individuals left with less than 100 of those individuals are breeding females.

The US and Canadian governments along with industry and environmental organizations are working together to prevent further damage to the population. However, one group, the Maine Lobstermen Association, says that it conducted its own study that identified other sources of disturbance as the primary reason for the population decrease.

Listen to the episode to find out why I agree (kind of) with the Association with some reservations.

Illegal fishing is difficult to enforce on the Ocean. The key to enforcing illegal activity on the water is monitoring. Using a boat and/or a plane can be costly and does not cover enough space to monitor effectively, which is the reason why satellites have become a great option for enforcement agencies to help in monitoring illegal activities.

Listen to the episode to find out how a company is about to release 36 satellites into space to help monitor illegal fishing.

TikTok Helping To #SaveTheOceans

TikTok is a social media platform that allows people to create short content in various forms (music, skits, etc.). It's a platform that is used by a younger demographic. It's a great platform to not only raise awareness of environmental problems but to raise money for a great cause.

Conservational International has teamed up with TikTok to raise money to save the Oceans. Every time a creator from a particular country uses the hashtag #SaveTheOceans, TikTok will donate $2 to the fund (up to $100,000).

There is a popular tourist spot in New Zealand, where people not only watch bottlenose dolphins, they also swim with them. Unfortunately, the swimming and touching of the dolphins have led to their decrease in population. There are now only 19 dolphins that return to the area.

The New Zealand Government have taken steps to protect the dolphins by banning swimming with the dolphins and only permitting a few boats to watch the dolphins over intervals of 20 minutes. The new restrictions along with regular monitoring could help the dolphins recover.

For more information, please listen to the episode.

You often hear of predictions of Climate Change consequences from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and you might even think to yourself that those predictions may not happen in your lifetime, or maybe you don't think an increase of a few millimeters in sea level makes a difference. The truth of the matter is sea level rise is happening now and many islands nations, as well as big cities, are facing the truth as we speak.

Alexandria, Egypt is one of those cities. Frequent floods are not only affecting the lives of the poor, but they are negatively affecting the foundations of some of the oldest buildings and prized archeological sites in the more than 2000-year-old city.

There were two stories that I came across this week that I feel should accompany the last episode on how Climate Change is messing up the planet. Listening to a story on Climate Change could be demoralizing, but there are other stories that could provide hope.

Those stories are about people who inspire us to do better or help us understand how to do things better.

The first story I discuss is about Greta Thunberg as she arrives in New York after sailing across the Atlantic at the age of 16-17 to participate in UN talks on Climate Change and hopefully inspire people in the US to take more action against Climate Change.

The second story is about a friend and colleague, Dr. Brett Fevaro, who recently took a road trip with his family in their Tesla to show that people COULD go on road trips and find charging stations.

Two Stories I Referred To In This One:

1) https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/cheap-driving-electric-vehicle-1.5260631?fbclid=IwAR26oLh56gZNyrl1HIAdGCemSCXOkcJwokoWj_OoxaN58yIxKe0RKsMwSJQ

2) https://www.theguardian.com/environment/live/2019/aug/28/greta-thunberg-sails-into-new-york-waters-after-crossing-atlantic-live-news?page=with%3Ablock-5d66def88f08ea59f447ad9e

Every second breath of air we take is due to the Ocean. Phytoplankton is responsible for this great breath of fresh air because they use photosynthesis to produce Oxygen while using up CO2 in the process. It is also one of the reasons why Climate Change has not grown out of control; however, Climate Change has affected the development and abundance of phytoplankton over time.

A new study shows diatoms, a species of phytoplankton with a silica cell wall that absorbs CO2 and sinks down to the bottom of the Ocean, where the CO2 is fixed onto the seafloor. The diatoms sink because of their heavy silica wall. Unfortunately, the silica wall in diatoms has been shrinking as the Oceans become more acidic. The silica walls have become smaller and the diatoms are not sinking to the seafloor where the CO2 can be fixed.

Cuba is known for its beautiful environment, especially its Oceans. The government has had quite a bit of control in regulating their fisheries as the industry was private; however, 20 years ago, a private fishing industry was created to create more jobs in the country. The result is a decrease of 80% in commercially important species such as grouper and snapper.

The new policies were set with the purpose of increasing collaboration with the US to use US technology while monitoring the fisheries.

Elections Canada has come out with a new rule for this upcoming federal election. The rule is targeted at Environmental Charities in Canada. These charities will not be able to say "Climate Change is real" to influence voters during advertising campaigns because one candidate has denied climate change; therefore, charities who make the statement will be considered partisan and their charitable status could be in jeopardy.

Utter BS in my opinion and it adds to the battle between the government of Canada and environmental charities. Listen to the episode for more information.

Atlantic Canada, seals, cod, and the fishing industry have had a tumultuous past. The science communication about seal and cod science has not been great when dealing with the fishing industry, especially since so many fishers rely on their catch as a way to support their families.

The Canadian Government has assembled a Task Team to work with the fishing industry to communicate seal science in a more effective manner than in the past.

Listen for how this task team was a bit confusing when announced in a group of pro seal people.

A US government that is hellbent on developing Natural Resources on land and in water will stop at nothing to ensure mining and oil/gas companies have very little obstacles in their way. One of the obstacles is the US Endangered Species Act that is responsible for protecting the Polar Bear, Manatee, and Bald Eagle.

The Trump Administration recently proposed changes to the Act that would put some of the species and any future species at risk of extinction due to human disturbance.

I talk about the details of the changes proposed during this episode.

The Trump administration made some changes to the planned testimony before Congrees of a State Department Analyst on the threat of Climate Change to Florida Reefs that questioned the scientific merit.

There could be some repercussions from this type of thought process on climate change in a swing state like Florida. Many Floridians are very aware of many environmental issues (water quality and coral reefs) that have hit Florida since the last election.

Take a listen to the episode for more information.

Freshwater species often get overlooked when we speak about the conservation of species that are in the water. The focus tends to remain on Ocean species; however, the loss of focus on Freshwater species seems to have resulted in an 88% decline of large vertebrate Freshwater species according to a new report.

Freshwater conservation can happen if we all become more eco-friendly and ensure our governments create policies to protect freshwater habitats in addition to marine habitats.

Take a listen to the episode to find out more.

Canada has announced the implementation of two new protected areas in the Arctic that will put their coastal ocean protection percentage up to 14%, which is above the 10% promised by the government by 2020.

One protected area will be a Marine Protected Area (320,000 square kilometers), which will protect the area from any industrial activity and the other protected area will be a Marine Conservation Area (108,000 square kilometers), which will allow little activity in the area.

Take a listen to the episode for more information on what the Protected Areas will keep safe.

Microplastics in the Ocean are a HUGE concern in the Ocean because they are difficult to detect, they are more toxic in micro form, and they are being ingested by many species in the Ocean. So how can we stop microplastics from getting in the Ocean?

Microplastics get into the Ocean through our use of plastics via our clothes, cosmetics, etc. When we wash our clothes or discard our materials with microplastics, they often end up in our waterways (creeks, streams, lakes, oceans) as they tend to move past the filters in the sewage treatment plants and end up polluting the environment.

Fionn Ferreira, an 18-year-old from Ireland, has devised a method of extracting microplastics from water. The method still needs to be tested and Fionn will be the first to admit that the major way to stop plastic from entering the Oceans is to stop using plastic; however, the method does seem promising.

Listen to the episode for more details.

Science Communication is a tricky business at times. A Science Communicator has to balance data and emotions when they create their messages. There are times when the messages have humor and other times when the messages have sadness. These messages can contain data, but the balance may be difficult...And as you will see in this episode, people can turn on you quickly if your message is not well-timed.

Greta Thunberg is a 16-year-old Climate Change Activist who has participated in international discussions on Climate Change, where she called out leaders from the United Nations to act on Climate Change instead of just talking about action.

Now Greta is traveling across the Atlantic Ocean on a sailboat to attend more international talks in New York, then Chile. Many people are calling her a hero, while some right-winged media are calling her names I don't want to write down.

Find out why this bullying makes me angry and how Greta responded to the attacks by listening to this episode.

Working towards a single-use plastic-free life is not the easiest thing in the world. Plastic is engrained in our lives to the point where we don't even think about it. Over the past few years, my wife and I have made it a point to reduce our single-use plastic items in our house.

This episode details a couple of events that made me think further of the way we use plastics inside and outside of our house.

A boat sank off the coast of British Columbia in 2016 and spilled 110,000 liters of heavy oils and fuel that washed up along the coast of Indigenous Lands. The Indigenous community used to harvest 25 marine species, but they are not been able to harvest any since the fuel and oil spill.

The Texas-based company that owned the ship was fined $3 million but was not required to do an impact assessment.
