Bradley MacDonald joins me on this Episode of Ocean Talk Friday to talk about how the Meat production industry in contributing to Climate Change. Speak UP For Blue community member, Randi Gustafsson, requested that I speak about the meat production the way it is conducted today. He also proposed that we should all stop eating meat to reduce climate change.

I invited Brad to join me on this episode because he writes about sustainability in today's world and new much more about the subject than I do. Plus, I feel that I am biased on this issue because I enjoy eating meat.

During the podcast, we discuss how meat production contributes to climate change; how smaller, local farms can be a better option; and, where to find knowledge on nutrition that is not biased.

Dr. Nancy Knowlton joins me on the podcast to discuss the Earth Optimism Summit that is occurring on April 21st-23rd to discuss Conservation Successes happening all over the world.

We, as science communicators; scientists; and, conservationist, tend to focus on the doom and gloom of conservation, the "What's not going right with the environment." However, people don't respond to that much. In fact, they tend to ignore it because they don't want to here negative things all the time. They need hope. Earth Optimism provides that hope because it demonstrate that the Earth can be fixed.

This Ocean Talk Friday I talk about the actions my family and I take to live for a better Ocean. What actions do you take?

I'm doing this for 2 reasons:
1) I do what I can afford and what seems to be realistic; and,
2) I want to inspire you to take the actions to live for a better Ocean.

Have you ever heard of a shark being stranded? Well it happens more often than you think. Sean van Sommeran knows all about it too because he has monitoring California beaches for more than 3 decades.

Sean approached me last week about a recent shark stranded in which the Marine Mammal Center found. Sean is responsible for determining what happened to the shark to prevent more occurrences from happening and to determine the cause.

Listen to Sean as we discuss shark strandings, their causes and how a recent incident at a Huttington Beach pier in not the first event.

I explore the way human activities are affecting Ocean habitats and species in a negative way even though they mean well. The first story deals with a cruise ship running aground on 1600 m2 of reef off the coast of Indonesia while at low tide (the crew should know not to go through the area at low tide). The second story involves a woman, Ocean Ramsey, who promotes shark awareness and protection through a service that she has where she teaches people to ride along the dorsal fin of large sharks.

Take a listen as to what I think of these human uses and what should be done to decrease their impact on the Ocean.

Do you ever search for in depth articles on the environment, especially the ocean, but can't find any article that fits your criteria? Well, Mongabay is the site for you. I came across Mongabay after the editor, Erik Hoffner, informed me of an article on Marine Protected Areas in which I might be interested in reading.

Marine Protected Areas are one of my research interests, as many of you long time listeners know. Therefore, I started reading the site and loved every part of it. The site is not just about Oceans as they have many articles on rainforests, land animals and freshwater habitats.

I had to ask Erik if I could interview someone from Mongabay to find out more about this non-profit, journalism organization. Erik referred me to Mike Gaworecki, who is today's guest on the podcast to tell us all how to conserve the environment in today's digital world.

Politicians have a strange way of twisting facts to ignore the importance of basic necessities such as clean water and air. Sometimes you wonder if they even care at all about what is going on in the world. The latest of the US federal government administration tactics is to take away the names of the Environmental Protection Agency by only referring to it as the EPA. They also mention repeatedly that the EPA is over-reaching its authority and hindering job creation.

I'm going to tell you why this is bad for the US environment, including the Ocean.

Marine Social Science plays a crucial role in Marine Conservation as it focuses on the trends of the people using the Ocean. Social science is playing more of a role in Marine Science and Conservation there days as we realized that the Ocean will manage itself if we are able to manage the use of the people who use the Oceans.

Dr. Edd Hind-Ozan, a veteran of the Ocean Talk Friday episodes and a Marine Social Scientist, is on the podcast today to talk about how social science works within Marine Conservation and how he got into doing this science as a profession.
