We know the problems that many of the common single-use plastics cause in the ocean and we also know that there are plenty of people working to create policies to ban these plastics, but there are more microplastics being used and are entering the environment; therefore, Joe Barnes and Elisa Davey (graduates students from American University) are going to let you know about some of the microplastics and how they are getting into the ocean. ![]() Dr. Janessa Gjeltema is an Assitant Professor at the University of California - Davis in Medicine and Epidemiology. In other words, she is a vet that focuses on the anthropogenic effects of pollution on animals. Jenessa joins me on the podcast to discuss a pilot study that she is crowdfunding to learn how plastic pollution (microplastics) affects different marine mammals. this research will be crucial in our journey to stop plastic pollution from entering the Ocean. You can help fund Jenessa's pilot project here: https://experiment.com/projects/which-marine-mammal-eats-the-mostmicroplasticss=discover&fbclid=IwAR2LyFZfXijeUs0G5zgzwFcoSXxk8L01gFD8V_CMQ0xu3Mk0mGr0am2Zz1U Any donation counts, especially as there is a bonus to the project for the number of people that donate. This is the last of our series from the St. Petersburg Science Festival where Dr. Craken McCaic and Dr. Scarlett Smash from the Marine Conservation Happy Hour interviewed marine scientists and educators on various Ocean features and issues. In this episode, the MCHH crew speak with Professors at the University of South Florida about how microplastics are influencing marine species. When did you stop using single-use plastics?
