What happens to fish producers when their customers close up shop and their supply chains fold? They need to pivot and identify a new market to ensure their survival. That's exactly what the Cornwall Fisheries Community did with their partners Mindfully Wired Communications and their Director, Katrina Ryan, is on the podcast to tell us how they did it. Would you buy seafood directly from the fishers? Share your thoughts in the Speak Up For Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/group. There are many trailblazers out there that are pushing the Marine Conservation sector outside of its comfort zone to move the sector forward in a positive manner. They don't always get the credit they deserve, but they definitely push the boundaries. I discuss some of my favourite Marine Conservation Trailblazers and challenge more of you to do the same. What are you doing to further Marine Conservation? Share your experience in the Speak Up For Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/group. Academic professors have a reputation that they stay in their "ivory towers" and do their research; however, Dr. Joshua Stoll, who is an Assistant Professor of Fisheries at the University of Maine, is also a fisherman and the co-founder of Local Catch. Local Catch is a network of community-supported fisheries that share information to help empower local fisheries. The stories Josh tells me in this interview are wonderful and goes to show that there is a need to bring fisheries back to local communities. How do you support local fisheries? I've spent over 15 years on social media, more than 10 of those years involved science communication. Over those years, I crafted a strategy through many experiences to engage with people on social media about science that I now use today. I should mention that my strategy is constantly evolving as I believe everyone's strategy should evolve. I focus on how to create a positive educational point out of a negative experience on interaction with someone who is frustrating you. What is your approach to Science Communication on Social Media? A decade ago, we witnessed one of the most devastating oil spills in the world as the Deepwater Horizon oil platform leaked oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The oil platform was owned by BP, who was fined $4.5 billion for the spill and the damage it caused to the Gulf of Mexico. $500 million dollars was granted to a coalition of agencies, non-profit organizations, and academic institutes to study the effects of the spill on the habitats and the ocean floor. An article in the Conversation was published recently that revealed fish livers and the ocean bottom contain oil from the BP oil spill, ten years later. Listen to the episode for more results. Bumble Bee Tuna was recently purchased by FCF, a Taiwan-based fishing company that has been accused of IUU (Illegal, Unregulated, and Unreported) Fishing and human rights violations in regards to fisheries (i.e. fisheries slavery). A Greenpeace report described the human rights violation cases that were as recent as 2019 by surveying migrant fishermen on three vessels tied to FCF. Bumble Bee Tuna owns a number of other brands that you may buy on a regular basis (check out this link for the details: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bumble_Bee_Foods sold on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/s?k=bumble+bee+tuna&crid=ZZM7S5VAZDUA&sprefix=bumble+bee+%2Caps%2C169&ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_11) Link To Article: https://news.mongabay.com/2020/04/pandemic-staple-report-links-top-tuna-company-to-forced-labor-illegal-fishing/ Should we be writing our government officials to let them know that we don't want these companies to sell their products when they don't treat fishers properly? There is a scientific review paper out that was authored by a number of high profiled marine scientists that say we can turn the poor health of the Ocean around by 2050 based on conservation success stories of animals such as the Humpback whale, manatee, and other charismatic ocean species. That's great news, right?! We will need to double our efforts to fight a number of issues such as climate change, ocean plastic pollution, and overfishing to name a few in order to change the tide on the Oceans. My good friend Dr. Craig McClain joins me on the podcast to announce the wonderful OceansDotComm for 2020. The first OceanDotComm was a huge success, where 38 Science Communicators gathered at the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium to tackle a topic and conduct a series of projects within a span of 5 days. There were ships, airboats, cultural dinners and lots of laughs involved during the challenge. That would be how I would sum up OceansDotComm2018. Now OceansDotComm 2020 is coming in October! The Netflix Series called Tiger King has gone viral more than the Coronavirus. It's a bizarre docuseries about a Private Big Cat Zoo owner who is charged with the attempted murder of the owner of a Big Cat Sanctuary. People can't stop talking about it, but they are focusing on the wrong thing. They are focusing on the people and not the idea of having big cats in private zoos that are looked after by unqualified people. The docuseries also compares private zoos to sanctuaries and makes you question the validity of a rescue sanctuary. Do you think there is a difference between private zoos and sanctuaries?
