Clay Groves, the host of the Fish Nerds Podcast, joins me in the podcast today for Ocean Talk Friday. If you are new to Ocean Talk Friday, it's where Clay and I each chose an Ocean article to discuss on the episode without telling the other person what their article is about. We describe the article and get each other's take on it.

Clay's article was about the Florida Man who was charged for taking a picture with a tiger shark that was dragged from saltwater to freshwater (not good for the shark) and held it out of water for long periods of time.

My article was about whether protecting 30% of the Ocean by 2030 was achievable.

We are bringing back Ocean Talk Friday! Clay Groves, Chief Executive Fish Nerd of the Fish Nerd Podcast, joins me to discuss a couple of articles on Marine Science and Conservation.

The first story we discuss is on a video where artisanal fishermen discuss how they have been forced to adapt their fishing methods because of the effects of Climate Change.

The second story involves how the colourful Fairy Wrasses have become so diverse due to the rise and fall of sea level over the past hundred million years.

Shark finning, the act of removing a shark's fin at sea and discarding their mangled body overboard for them to die, is a terrible act and the reason why many marine conservation organizations are trying to ban finning and fins in many countries around the world, including in the US.

There is a proposed bill that is in Congress right now that is proposing the possession and sale of shark fins in the US. It seems as though its a good plan, right? Well, at least two shark scientists think its a bad idea. How could they you ask? Take a listen to the podcast to find out what they wrote in a peer reviewed journal article in Marine Policy.

Also on the show, I talk about a cool adaptation of the electric eel and how it wards off hungry predators like crocodiles and cats.

This is a special Ocean Talk Friday Episode where I have two colleagues and friends that would like to introduce you to a new podcast we've been working on called Marine Conservation Happy Hour. It's a podcast where we get together after work (virtually, of course) and talk about what's happening in our respective fields over a few drinks. It's something that we've been working on for a while and I find our chemistry is growing.

Today, we discuss a few stories that are centred around marine mammals. The first two stories deal with the removal of regulatory tools and advice to protect Marine Mammals. The Federal Government has defunded the Marine Mammal Commission, which is a body of independent scientists that make decisions on marine mammal protections in the face of government projects.

We also talk about the US Federal Government taking away important protections for Marine Mammals on the West Coast. The ban on drift nets has now been removed making marine mammals vulnerable to getting caught and drowning in the nets. Not a good choice. You will hear how the fishing industry was for the drift net ban in the first place. We chat about why this happened and what will be the consequences.

We talk Vaquita and the potential solutions that people are trying to put in place to reverse the rate of extinction of the cutest species on the planet. I get a little silly with one of my proposals.

Finally, we end on a good note. We talk about the increase of Humpback Whales in the New York City area. This is a great success story that my friends, Dr. Smash and Dr. Craken gobbled up.

All in all I hope you enjoyed this episode of OTF where we feature the Marine Conservation Happy Hour. Things get a little crazy and loud near the end...could be the drinks talking. But we had some fun doing this. I hope you did as well!!!

Dr. Lyne Morissette joins me on Ocean Talk Friday to report back on her time at the Earth Optimism Summit, which she said changed her life!!!

The Earth Optimism Summit happened last weekend sandwiching the March for Science in Washington, D.C. Both events were huge successes according to many attendees who were able to do both. Dr. Lyne Morissette, who has been on this podcast numerous times, was able to attend the Summit and was kind enough to come on and share her experience.

Listen to why she thinks Marine Science and Conservation needs to put out more optimism in their messages.

I am solo today for Ocean Talk Friday so I decided to speak on two major events happening in Washington, DC this weekend: Earth Optimism Summit and the March for Science.

Friend of the podcast, Dr. Michelle LaRue, will be speaking at the Earth Optimism Summit as well as many other speakers from all over the world. I chat about the Summit and all the wonderful topics that will be covered over the three days.

On Saturday, Earth Day will be met with a March for Science by a number of people who want to tell governments around the world that Science is important in decision making, especially when it comes to the environment. People have been talking about not Marching in the podcast because they don't want the public to think that science is politicized. I talk about my thoughts on the March and why I am for it.

We switched up the normal structure of the episode this week where we discussed 1 article and 3 topics that are hot in the Marine Science and Conservation Community.

Michelle starts the episode off by discussing the launch of her new Citizen Science Project about quantifying the Weddell seal population in the Antarctic.

Here are the topics:

1) Climate Change could affect the way Polar Bears hunt seals;
2) Why is the Sea Grant budget being cut?;
3) March For Science and why it's important; and,
4) What will Michelle be discussing during her presentation at the Earth Optimism Summit.

Wow, 300 episodes! Publishing 300 episodes is something that I never thought that I would be able to do. A year and a half ago, I published my first podcast to help people understand what was happening with the Ocean and what solutions they could implement to help resolve the problem. Now, after 300 episodes and over 70K downloads, the Speak Up for Blue Community has grown into a force that is out to protect the Ocean.

Nathan Johnson, Dr. Lyne Morissette and Dr. Edd Hind-Ozan join me on this special Ocean Talk Friday to discuss the following topics:

1) Should we pay to get experience in Marine Science and Conservation to benefit our careers?
2) Is BREXIT good for managing fisheries?
3) Is the March for Science good for Science?
4) Conservation vs Animal Rights
5) Is downlisting a Species At Risk good or bad for Species Risk Management (Manatee as an Example).

Nathan and I go in on a tweet that the House Science Committee sent out supporting a non-fact based story from none other than the infamous Breitbart website. The blow back on Twitter was brutal as many people saw right through the tweet as nothing but a political stance without any scientific evidence. However, could this type of "fake" news influence a portion of the US population that support the newly elected administration. Only time will tell.

We cover this story and the following:
1) Protecting biodiversity in the Ocean to support South Pacific tourism;
2) Tracking missing shipping containers from trans-ocean freighters; and,
3) Why seabirds can't stop eating plastic.

I wanted to continue covering the theme of grassroots marine conservation since I think it is going to become one of the focuses on Speak Up For Blue.

Here are 3 American Grassroots Conservation Projects I covered in this episode (I will cover more international projects as I find them: please email me if you have a project in mind - andrew@speakupforblue.com).

1) Save Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge;

2) How you can ensure Climate Change remains a priority for the new US federal administration; and,

The election really threw everyone, or most people for a loop, especially the Marine Science and Conservation community. The President-Elect, Donald Trump, has been determined about denying climate change and reducing environmental government departments such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Environment (DOE), and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The reduction in government resources to adequately deal with Ocean issues such as Climate Change, Over fishing, Ocean Mining, Plastic Pollution, etc., will mean that there will have to be grassroots movements to ensure the federal government will honour what is important to their constituents. It will require strategic planning to ensure your environmental values (similar to your country's values) are upheld.

For the next four years, Speak Up For Blue will do our best to provide you with the guidance required to effectively get your environmental values heard by the current administration.

I am pleased to announce that Ocean Talk Friday is back after a 3 week hiatus. Nathan and I got back together to discuss the latest and important topics covered in the news. Today we discussed the following topics:

1) The Hawaii National Monument expansion;

2) The economy of marine conservation;

3) Seamounts are vulnerable and we need to do something about it;

4) What to do when poverty meets marine conservation; and,

5) A celebrity donated their yatch to a marine conservation organization.

Listen to the podcast to find out who the celebrity is.

Do you want to talk about how you can pursue a career in Marine Conservation? Send me an email and let's chat.
