I just wrapped up a course I was teaching for the Duke Executive Education program for the Nicholas School Of Environment. It was a great course with fantastic students! As I wrapped up the course, I was speaking with Claire and mentioned that the students who start a podcast on their own (independent of their work) will open themselves up for amazing opportunities down the line, similar to what happened to me multiple times. Check out some of the opportunities that were presented to me over the past 5 years of podcasting. What would prevent you from starting a podcast for the environment? Jimmy Thomson is an environmental journalist, who wrote an interesting article about how Fisheries Observers off the Coast of BC are receiving threats about reporting the true numbers of fish they see being taken. I invited Jimmy on the podcast to tell us some of the stories he was told by 11 Fisheries Observers and what they continue to go through while doing their jobs. I wanted to have Jimmy on the podcast because I normally recommend to early-career scientists that they become Fisheries Observers to get experience while being paid very well; however, there are important aspects about the job that they should know before applying. Earth Day is a time where we reflect on how humans can become more sustainable. It's a time where people and organizations release optimistic reports or awareness campaigns to get people thinking about the Earth; however, this year was a bit different. Michael Moore produced and released The Planet Of The Humans, a documentary that did the exact opposite of what Earth Day is supposed to do. It tried to bring down the green movement by bringing up outdated misinformation...and many people bought it. I reviewed this documentary for this episode, but I hope to get someone more qualified to come on the podcast and provide more detail about the claims made in this movie. A few weeks ago, I saw a post by my friend and colleague, Emily Cunningham, about a huge project that she and her project partners just won. I've spent over 15 years on social media, more than 10 of those years involved science communication. Over those years, I crafted a strategy through many experiences to engage with people on social media about science that I now use today. I should mention that my strategy is constantly evolving as I believe everyone's strategy should evolve. I focus on how to create a positive educational point out of a negative experience on interaction with someone who is frustrating you. What is your approach to Science Communication on Social Media? A decade ago, we witnessed one of the most devastating oil spills in the world as the Deepwater Horizon oil platform leaked oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The oil platform was owned by BP, who was fined $4.5 billion for the spill and the damage it caused to the Gulf of Mexico. $500 million dollars was granted to a coalition of agencies, non-profit organizations, and academic institutes to study the effects of the spill on the habitats and the ocean floor. An article in the Conversation was published recently that revealed fish livers and the ocean bottom contain oil from the BP oil spill, ten years later. Listen to the episode for more results. The Netflix Series called Tiger King has gone viral more than the Coronavirus. It's a bizarre docuseries about a Private Big Cat Zoo owner who is charged with the attempted murder of the owner of a Big Cat Sanctuary. People can't stop talking about it, but they are focusing on the wrong thing. They are focusing on the people and not the idea of having big cats in private zoos that are looked after by unqualified people. The docuseries also compares private zoos to sanctuaries and makes you question the validity of a rescue sanctuary. Do you think there is a difference between private zoos and sanctuaries? In 2003, 40 Humpback whales were observed in the MPA compared to 190 individuals in 2017. At some point in your Marine Conservation Career, you will face the question of whether one species is worth more than the other. Science alone will not be able to answer the question. The article that I cover today explores this idea using grey seals and cod on the Atlantic coast as an example. It's all due to Climate Change that increased the speed of melting. Less habitat is a bit of a concern to researchers. Some Pacific Salmon species will not do as well in warmer conditions. Listen to the episode to find out which species will do well and which ones won't. The times of a single-page cover letter are over. In Marine Conservation, your cover letter needs to include specific information that will help the person reviewing your application to decide whether you warrant a closer look (i.e. an interview). I give you tips on how to write a cover letter that will get you closer to getting the interview. It worked for me. Once I started using this strategy, I was able to get more interviews on applications that I submitted. Do you use the same strategy when writing your cover letter? Do you remember when the Senator brought the snowball onto the Senate floor to demonstrate that Climate Change was not real? I sure do. You will find out my thoughts about the event on this Throwback episode to episode 8, my first solo/non-interview episode. It was a time where President Obama declared Climate Change as the biggest threat to the United States. That claim was backed up by the Navy, NASA and other scientific associations. However, Republican politicians were fighting any claim that Climate Change was real...and nothing has changed except that the Republicans are now in charge. This episode may be the most powerful episode that we have ever published on Speak Up For The Ocean Blue podcast. It's all because of my guest today, Chelsea Gray, a PhD student who studies basking sharks. Unfortunately, we are not discussing Chelsea's PhD today as Chelsea will be telling us about something that happened to her a couple of years ago that was terrible. She will also be telling us what happened after as she tried to seek justice. You have to listen to this story to believe it. Do you think your school will protect your fellow graduate students? It's quite frustrating when you spend so much time applying for a job and then hear nothing back as to whether you go an interview or your application was even close. It took me a while to figure out my Marine Conservation Career Path. 18 years to be exact. I experimented quite a bit with jobs in different sectors, but I never really found the job that equalled my passion for Marine Conservation. Full disclosure, my path was restricted to being a Marine Biologist living in Ontario, which required me to be creative. That creativity spawned this very podcast and fulfilled my passion and path for my Marine Conservation Career. There are many of you in the audience who are following in my footsteps. You are not looking to follow your career path in Marine Conservation because all you are doing is searching for ANYTHING in Marine Conservation. It's the same way I started my career. SeaWorld has been through a lot since the release of a documentary that exposed the truth behind marine mammal captivity. Blackfish was released in 2013 and caused SeaWorld to change its business practices surrounding Orcas; however, they were sued for allegedly downplaying the effect of Blackfish on their reporting to investors. They had to pay quite a bit of money but potentially got off without admitting to being guilty. Now, Seaworld is starting to earn money again after promoting free beer in Orlando and rides in California. They still have Orcas but they don't do shows nor do they profit off of the Orca reproduction business because it is now illegal. No Orca shows confirm that the best way to see Orcas is in the wild with a reputable Whale Watching outfit. What type of music do coral fish like? Well, a group of researchers from the University of Exeter found out recently. The researchers probably didn't play Stairway To Heaven to attract young juvenile fish to coral reefs; however, they did play the sounds of healthy reefs to attract young, vibrant fish to unhealthy reefs in hopes that it would activate something within the reef to start its way back to good health. The noise worked because fish came to the reefs more than they did to reefs where no noise was played. Listen to the episode to find out why, and find out what noises constitute a healthy reef. Climate Change is destroying our planet and altering our Oceans. There is no doubt about it. Australia is undergoing an unprecedented Heat Wave and it is causing mass fish kills along the Western Australian Coastline. Air Temperatures above 50C are occurring for over 5 days, which has never happened in this region since they started monitoring air temperature in 1993 via satellites. Higher temperatures do occur during the summer, but not until mid-summer in February. Higher temperatures in December worry researchers as they have never observed these temperatures this early. Higher temperatures and mass fish kills make you wonder why more governments are not taking more Climate Change action. I hope that protests such as the Climate Strikes will inspire more people who want action to reduce Green House Gases will run for office in the near future. Often times, science communicators are trying to undo the damage caused by a documentary or a certain President that spews utter garbage that is wrong on a specific environmental subject. I had a thought about science communication the other day. I noticed that it's always the same people that speak up for conservation. The people who speak up are great, but it's always the same people. I feel as though we need new people to start speaking out. Great Thunberg is relatively new to the game and she has done a great job in speaking up for doing something about Climate Change. Indonesia is known for its beautiful beaches and clear ocean waters that are visited by millions of people every year. They are also known for blowing up boats who fish illegally in their waters, or so they used to be...maybe...we aren't sure yet. A new Fisheries Minister is contemplating the rule of blowing up boats is they are caught fishing illegally and replace it with boat seizures that are either auctioned off or given to local fishers. Some environmental groups are worried that the latter won't be much of a deterrent for illegal fishing. What say you? Clay took part in National Podcast Posting Month (NaPodPoMo), where he posted a podcast episode every day during the month of November. Clay asked me to submit a segment for his podcast. We had a slight problem that we never encountered here on the Speak Up For Blue Team: We were asked to take down an episode because our guest's boss was worried that the information that was discussed briefly on an episode was going to affect the future funding from a grantor. The Speak Up For Blue Team (with 7 podcasts) has communicated a lot of science, but we encounter barriers from time to time. Educating the public on how to change their behaviour from using single-use plastics to using more sustainable alternatives is the key to reducing the amount of plastic that ends up in the Ocean. We keep seeing articles about people trying to clean up the Oceans. There are even companies that are built off of this premise; however, cleaning the Ocean is our last ditch effort and does not mean the Oceans will ever be clean from plastic. We need to stop plastics from getting into the Ocean by refusing single-use plastic. The best way to do this is to focus on educating the public and change their behaviour. You may have seen a plethora of articles and political announcements on tree planting to mitigate (reduce) climate change by absorbing more Carbon Dioxide. As news broke about the destruction of the Amazon Rainforest a few months ago, scientists reiterated the need for trees to absorb carbon dioxide (CO2), a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) that contributes to Climate Change. However, trees aren't the only plants that absorb CO2. Seagrasses may even be a better plant type to absorb the GHG. In this episode, I discuss the benefit of protecting Seagrass habitats and how countries should consider restoring these useful habitats to help attain the goals set out in the Paris Climate Change Agreement. It's amazing when the science community announces the discovery of a new species, especially when it's a new beaked whale. I mean, how can you miss a beaked whale? This opportunity of discovery came during the grim event of stranding of 6 beaked whale species. Some of the whales seemed shorter than others and were a different colour, which prompt researchers to investigate further. Find out more details of the study by listening to the podcast. A Senator calls a scientist into questions after she makes a false statement that coral bleaching is a natural event. The Scientist fires back a proper answer but doesn't sway the politician. I talk about why it's so important to vote for politicians that have a good sense of the scientific method. As I reach my mid-career point, I often reflect on how my career has impacted the Marine Conservation community. Did I help solve some problems for people? Did I provide the resources that I thought were important for people to succeed in Marine Conservation? These are the questions that I probably should have asked myself 20 .years ago when I was starting my career. I don't have regrets in my career as everything I did lead me to a point in my career where I feel that I am having an impact on Marine Conservation; however, I am not getting paid a career-type wage to do Marine Conservation podcasting and I don't feel guilty about it. You know that guilt. It's the guilty feeling that you get when you think of working in a job/career that might be able to make you money to pay the bills, but it's not in Marine Conservation. The guilt you feel when you think of doing anything but science, the subject that you paid a ton of money to learn for 4, 6, 10 years (and still paying off!). It's the same guilt I felt when I considered leaving the paid career of Marine Conservation to podcast for Marine Conservation and impact more lives than I ever could think about doing in my full-time job. Letting go of the guilt made me happy! Does your Marine Conservation job follow what you feel allows you to have an impact on Marine Conservation? I asked what the members thought was holding them back from building their Marine Conservation Career. The top answer so far was "Getting My Foot In The Door After College." I had some initial thoughts about the answer so I recorded it. What do you think is holding you back from getting a Marine Conservation Job/Career? The City of Del Mar, California is working on a plan to adapt to Sea Level Rise caused by Climate Change. City planners must get the plan approved by the California Coastal Commission in order to implement the plan; however, the Coastal Commission and the City do not agree on the way Del Mar should adapt to Sea Level Rise. Del Mar does not think a managed retreat (where the City would buy properties from homeowners as well as a relocation spot.) will work as their properties are more expensive than the surrounding area and the City could not afford the amount necessary to buy the properties. I wanted to highlight the difficulty of preparing plans like the one discussed during this episode.
